The Internet
What is the Internet?
The Internet is made up of Millions and Millions of computer networks brought together to create a vast "inter-network". However that word never caught on, and it was shortened to the much easier and well known word "internet"
World Wide web (WWW)
The World Wide Web (WWW) is part of the Internet although it is a lot younger. The Internet is about 40 years old whereas the WWW is only about 20 years old.
CERN is the world famous underground physics lab in Switzerland, the WWW was developed here by Tim Berners-lee around 1990.
Web sites, Pages and Browsers
Web sites are hosted on computers called Web Servers. These machines will send a Web Page to your Browser when requested.
There a lot of different web browsers available, such as Firefox, Internet explorer, Safari. They all do the same job, to display a web page from a web server.
http
all Web page has an address (URL) that starts with http
This is very important because it is what brings the World Wide Web together. The http is a communication standard, or mostly known as a 'protocol'. If two computers were to use the same 'protocol', then they can share information between them. The World Wide Web uses the http protocol.
