Good morning Cannon families,


Happy Mother's Day to all our Cannon moms!


To our Cannon Community - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! This past week you honored our staff during National Teacher Appreciation Week and it was AMAZING! Our Cannon PTA hospitality leaders, and volunteers took extra special care this week to make sure our staff felt loved and appreciated! You went above and beyond! I can not say enough how wonderful you are - WE ARE PROUD TO PARTNER WITH YOU!


K-2 Parents-End of the Year mClass and AimsWeb Reports will be sent home by the end of this coming week. Please don't hesitate to ask your teacher if you have questions regarding the reports.


3-5th Grade Parents-End of the Year Assessments will begin after STAAR, therefore, teachers will send AimsWeb Reports for Reading and Math on the last week of school.


STAAR TESTING THIS WEEK ~ STAAR kicks off this week on May 10th! Please note that anytime we have a STAAR test, campuses are CLOSED. What does this mean? Parents cannot come into the building to bring lunches or to pull students. In the event of an emergency, call the front office and if your student needs to be pulled out, we will retrieve your students (yes, this includes K-2nd graders).


During state testing season, campuses are closed to visitors in order to have a secured testing environment, as required by the state. As communicated previously, Cannon will be a Closed Campus for STAAR Testing May 10 - 18.


Lunchtimes may be modified to accommodate and maximize student testing opportunities during these testing days. Please limit contact with the front office to emergencies only. As a reminder, students have the ability to receive a free lunch from our nutritional service team every day this school year. Please remind your student to not forget their lunch if they do bring one from home that day. Also, please encourage your student to get a good night's rest the night before any of their assessment days while also considering limiting their technology use before bedtime to maximize their rest.


State law states that students may NOT opt-out of standardized or any other tests. If the student is absent on the day of the assessment, they will be required to make up the assessment when they return to school.


We encourage all students to do their best on the state assessment as it has implications for the student in regards to summer programs or next school year schedules with additional required tutorials. If a student misses particular assessments, the student will have required tutorial times per the state's House Bill 4545.


Finally, remind your student to bring their fully charged district-issued device, along with their charger and plug-in headphones (Bluetooth headphones are not allowed). Students may also bring a water bottle.


Thank you for encouraging your student to do their best and support the teachers/school as we navigate testing season together!

4th Grade: 12:00-1:00 Lunch picnic with parents - parents bring their favorite picnic food (Cafeteria food will be available if needed - Students ONLY). The grade level will provide a sweet treat for everybody with a goodie during the picnic. Awards in the amphitheater at 1:00 after lunch.

Fast Passes for End of Year Success Ceremonies

You can click the following links to sign-up in advance for a Fast Pass IF you have been to Cannon during the 21-22 school year and signed in with your Driver's License to a kiosk. These will be available for pick-up beginning 30 minutes before your scheduled ceremony & celebration. Having a Fast Pass allows you to skip the lines at the kiosk on the day of the event and have your pass printed in advance for pick-up.


All fast passes must be requested by Thursday, May 19th.

  • Arrival begins at 7:25 and Dismissal begins at 3:05.

  • All students will remain with the grade level for dismissal. Each grade level will have a specific area to report to while waiting for their ride. All students will either be released as a walker, bus rider or placed in a car. Students will not be allowed to walk around the building to meet parents or cars.

  • Place your Car Tag with the student name on the passenger side visor. If you do not have your car tag, you will need to provide your driver's license. This will hold up the line!

  • Do not cross lanes during drop off and pick up.

  • Parents enter the car lane from W. College St. and must pull through the car lane until their student is dropped off/loaded into the car at the designated area near where new sidewalks will be available. Please do not drop off students until you are in this designated area. We do not want students walking, without supervision, nor between any cars, in any areas around traffic areas.

  • Please pay careful attention to staff as they direct and support procedures to ensure safety and efficiency.

  • As you are driving, if you are using the left side lane closest to the parking lot, students must exit and enter the car from the driver side back door ONLY.

  • As you are driving, if you are using the right/curbside/school side lane, students must exit and enter the car from passenger side doors ONLY.

  • When leaving the parking lot the right lane turns right and the left lane turns left.

  • It is imperative that you watch the staff volunteers and the Stop Sign to ensure you are not moving while students are walking in the paths of cars.

  • You may leave the parking lot at any time during arrival and dismissal from the exit side.

  • Notify changes in transportation to the office prior to 2:15 pm.

  • Please do not block the neighborhood entrances from College street.

  • If you would like to park and walk up to get your scholar, we ask that you wait in the designated areas shown below and wait for a staff member to call your Cub's name based on you holding your blue car tag. If parents choose to walk up, we will call for those scholars after the carline is moving.

Our hope is for students to gain knowledge about possible careers/jobs and the college and/or experiences required to obtain these professions. Lunch Visitors ~

Lunch guests will still sign-in through our secure vestibule, complete the COVID screening, and meet their Cannon Cub at the entrance to the cafeteria before proceeding to the booth table area for lunch. We will post the next month of lunches to sign-up for around the beginning of each month here in The Cannon Connection and it will remain linked in the lunch section at the bottom for the remainder of the month. We ask that you please be courteous to the rest of the community and limit lunch visits with your child to no more than one per month so that all families have the opportunity to visit. We appreciate your cooperation. Each family needs only 1 slot reserved. When it asks for quantity of visitors, please select just 1. You may bring whomever you want on the day you check-in at the school office to sit at your family booth. Families will only be permitted to eat with their Cub (Sorry, no friends). Thank you for cleaning up and throwing away trash after your family lunch!

GCISD Color Guard Camp

Hello,


I am the director of the Colleyville Heritage Color Guard and wanted to tell you about an opportunity for our community. We are going to host a color guard camp for 1st-8th Graders! Students will learn how to learn how to use auxiliary equipment from myself, Dr. Martin Godoy (CHHS), and Mr. Draper (GHS), Experience is not necessary!


We are hoping to reach our goal of 40 participants!

Registration for the 2022-2023 school year begins May 2

Beginning Monday, registration for both new and returning families will be open in Skyward. As a reminder, the primary guardian will need to complete the registration in Skyward Family Access. Don't forget to provide two forms of proof of residency to complete the registration process. If you have forgotten your login and/or password, please click on Forgot login or password on the login screen and that information will be sent to your email.


Please note that bus rider registration will not be included in Skyward registration this year. If students need to register as a bus rider, they can do so by visiting www.GCISD.net/transportation after completing registration in Skyward.

Bring Your Own Device Update

As GCISD continues preparations for next school year, the Technology Services department has an important update to share regarding the use of personal devices on GCISD campuses. Beginning in August 2022, personal PC or MacBook laptops will no longer be able to connect to the internet while on a GCISD campus. This means that students will need to use a district-issued device while on campus.


District-issued devices are already required during standardized state testing, but will now be required at all times when using the internet on a GCISD campus. This change is being implemented to further enhance the District’s cybersecurity efforts. Additionally, GCISD will be able to better provide technical support if all students are utilizing district-issued technology.


Prior to the start of the 2022-2023 school year, all GCISD students who do not already have a district-issued device will be given one at a designated time on their campus. Pre-K through 2nd-grade students will receive an iPad, 3rd-grade through 8th-grade students will receive a Chromebook, and 9th-grade through 12th-grade students will receive a Windows PC.


Although personal laptops and tablets will no longer be able to connect, personal cell phones will still be able to connect to the “GCISD BYOD Guest Wireless” Wi-Fi network. Any questions or concerns regarding this change can be directed to technology@gcisd.net.

Summer School Information

As campuses have sent home the early letters to families about their students' possible recommendation to attend Dream Camp due to potential STAAR scores in 3rd 4th, and 5th, we discovered the need to revise and clarify some components of our summer programs.


  1. Dream Camp - By Invitation ONLY (Language Acquisition for Emergent Bilinguals and Intervention for PreK-2nd)
    • Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 2:30 at Timberline Elementary
    • June 1 - July 1
  2. Accelerated Instruction at Dream Camp (HB 4545 for 3rd and 4th graders who do not perform satisfactorily on STAAR with a Does Not Meet).
    • Monday - Friday, 8:00 - 12:00 at Timberline Elementary
    • June 1 - completion of 30 or 60 hours
    • No fee for HB 4545 tutorials
  3. STAAR Academy (HB 4545 for 5th- 8th graders who do not perform satisfactorily on STAAR with a Does Not Meet).
    • Monday - Friday, 8:00 - noon at Colleyville Heritage High School
    • June 6 - June 24


We wanted to pass along some helpful information for parents as they have questions about the programs, particularly for the Accelerated Instruction at Dream Camp for 3rd and 4th grade students and STAAR Academy for 5th graders.

During the week of May 23-27, 2022, administrators from your elementary campus will contact you if your student is recommended to attend Accelerated Instruction at Dream Camp or the STAR Academy. Students are recommended if they do not perform satisfactorily on a STAAR or STAAR Alt exam and are identified as needing to participate in 30 or 60 hours of extra tutoring during the summer to accelerate their learning per subject. Students who do not complete the 30 or 60 hours this summer will need to complete their hours during the 2022-2023 school year. Teachers will provide 4 hours of accelerated instruction in either math or reading each day. If a student plans to miss 5 days or more of summer instruction, it will be recommended that they complete their hours during the 22-23 school year. In order for us to secure a student's spot, the parents must commit to their child attending daily to fulfill all of their hours. Due to staffing, we will be unable to accommodate students who only attend partial days.

Construction Updates - Various GCISD Tracks Closed for Public Use

Over the next few months, construction will be taking place on the track and turf at a few GCISD locations. This means that the track and field at the following locations will be closed for public use until further notice:


  • Colleyville Heritage High - closed beginning May 1

  • Mustang Panther Stadium - closed beginning May 1

  • Cross Timbers Middle - closed beginning June 1


Community members looking for a track available for public use can utilize Colleyville Middle, Grapevine Middle or Heritage Middle during this time. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Summer Food Service Program provides free meals to all children age 18 and younger. These meals provide essential nutrients for active growing kids. Children need good nutrition year-round so they can learn, grow and succeed in life. With nearly 2 million food insecure children living in Texas, these healthy meals are vital to nourishing young Texans during the summer vacation.


Summer food program meal sites help children succeed by providing the nourishment they need to return to school in the fall ready to thrive. To participate in the free meal program, all kids have to do is show up at a serving site.

Breakfast and lunch will be offer vs. serve. Students will need to select a minimum three components for breakfast and lunch. At lunch the meal must include a fruit or vegetable in order to have a complete meal.


The entire meal must be consumed at the serving site absolutely no “to go” breakfasts or lunches are available.

Survey Regarding HSI

GCISD is reviewing human sexuality instruction in light of changes made by the Texas Legislature and the adoption of a new health textbook. As GCISD considers next steps in light of these changes, we are seeking parental input and feedback.


The District has already emailed to parents a letter via Skyward that further explains legislative changes and reviews the District's current practices. We encourage parents who want to become more familiar with the District's current human sexuality instruction, and to learn about potential new instructional materials, to learn more by visiting the GCISD website, then complete the survey.


Video instructions on accessing the survey can be watched here. If you plan to not opt your child into this portion of the health education curriculum, we are asking that you still complete the survey.

Standard Response Protocols

In GCISD, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We have partnered with the I Love You Guys Foundation to implement Standard Response Protocols, or as we called them, Ss, that are used in emergency situations.


Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe. STAAR Online

The Texas Education Agency (TEA) is transitioning all state assessments to be administered online by the 2022–2023 school year. To support this change, GCISD will be administering all state assessments online this Spring and is encouraging students to visit the practice tests site released by the TEA to prepare for online testing. For upcoming testing, students will be using district issued personal devices.


The online practice tests familiarize students with the general tools, designated supports, and accessibility features that may appear in online tests. In the practice site, there are features that may be turned on and off for students with identified accommodations such as text-to-speech and spelling assistance. Organized by grade level and subject, all 2018, 2019, and 2021 STAAR released tests are also available on the online practice site . STAAR Practice, Practice, Practice ~

Check out this opportunity to practice but before you do, know these important things:


1. All 3rd-5th grade students should practice at least three times before testing in May.

2. Students have an actual login they will receive while here at school. THIS practice above is only the "Guest View".

3. Play with the "Guest View" so you can see EVERYTHING!!

4. When your student(s) sign in with their personal login (we will give them those when they practice at school), they WILL NOT see everything the "guest view" offers because their site will be tailored to their personal accommodations - IF they have any.

5. Check out this detailed instruction sheet to see how to log in as a guest so you and your student can play around with it.

6. You don't have to complete or have your student practice an entire test but I HIGHLY recommend that you look through it. As the leader of the staff that has already played with it, I found some unique things that would've thrown me off if I didn't practice. Get your students to see what the site has to offer.

UPDATED Math Telescoping Exams

Math Telescoping Exams

Second round of testing opportunities for Telescoping in Math for the 2022-2023 school year will be available in

JULY 2022 for GCISD students who are currently completing Grades K-7.


The Math Telescoping Parent Information Packet is available on the GCISD district website under the “Parents” tab and then click on “Math Telescoping”. Here you will be on the main Math Telescoping, Grades K-7 website page. Please view the current Acceleration Testing Calendar for 2021-2022 on the website.


Parents will find information about the requirements to qualify for Math Telescoping and instructions about the Online Registration Process and the required Payment Online Process. View the TEKS on the TEA website and download Study Guides for the exams purchased from UTHS-Austin. These two links, TEKS and UTHS Study guide are found at the bottom of the Math Telescoping main page of the GCISD website.


Exam Fee(s): There is a fee for EACH exam ordered. All Paper and Online Remote exams are ordered from UTHS-Austin. Please review the Math Telescoping Crosswalk BEFORE registering to see if your child will be required to take 1 or 2 exams. This is super important for registration and exam fees.

Math Exam Levels 1 & 2 must be given orally. These Paper exams will be administered at the GCISD location. Proctors will read the questions and students will mark their answers in the test booklet. Proctors will transcribe their answers to a computer graded answer sheet for scoring by the UTHS-Austin Testing Center.


The online registration form will go live on the GCISD website June 13-21, 2022 for the July test dates.

Instructional Calendar Changes for this school year~

Due to GCISD’s recent closure on February 24 due to winter weather, beginning on March 7, ten (10) minutes will be added to the end of each school day to recover the necessary amount of instructional minutes. New release times for GCISD schools will be as follows:


  • Elementary - 3:05 p.m.
  • Middle - 3:35 p.m.
  • High - 4:10 p.m.


Just as a reminder, due to the previous closures due to weather and COVID-19, the following changes are still in effect:


  • Friday, March 11 will no longer be an early release day. Students will attend school for the full day.

  • Students will be in school on Friday, April 15 and Monday, April 18 which were originally planned for inclement weather days.

  • Wednesday, May 25 and Thursday, May 26 will no longer be early release days, except for high school students. All elementary and middle school students will attend school for the full day.


*NOTE: These changes do not affect the instructional calendars for Collegiate Academy or iUniversity Prep.

2022-2023 Instructional Calendar

On Monday, December 13, the GCISD Board of Trustees approved the student and staff instructional calendar for the 2022-2023 school year.

A few highlights from the 2022-2023 instructional calendar:

  • Students will begin classes on Wednesday, August 17.

  • Students will have a four-day weekend from October 29 - November 1, with October 31 and November 1 being Professional Development Days.

  • Classes end for the first semester on Wednesday, December 21. The second semester begins after Winter Break on Monday, January 9.

  • Teachers return from Winter Break on Friday, January 6, for a Professional Development Day.

  • Spring Break is March 13 - March 17.

  • Students and staff will have a four-day weekend in April (dependent on the need to makeup one or both inclement weather days).

  • Classes are finished on Thursday, May 25.

Cafe Menu Update!

Please see the updated menu attached. Nutrition services has indicated the vegetarian friendly items in green. In addition, they have added a couple of plant based menu items on the menu. They also plan to offer a hummus box daily in addition to the baked potato that is available. All menu items are subject to change due to availability. Students may always select a vegetable plate that consists of two vegetables, one fruit, one grain, and milk.
