One School, One Book Kick Off!!!
Our One School, One Book is Grump by Liesl Shurtliff!! The students celebrated the kick-off of this school-wide event at an assembly today where your child received a copy of Liesl Shurtliff's book. They were also surprised to hear that Liesl Shurtliff will be our visiting author on March 25th. Thank you to the PTO for supporting this family reading event! This is a fun book for all ages.
For the next six weeks, I'd like everyone to set aside a little time each night or weekend so your family can participate in this special school-wide project.
I am asking parents to read the weekly assigned pages at home with your child/children. Even if your child has read this book before, One School, One Book allows a reread to be more exciting and interactive as a family. That's right the whole family. Settle down on these winter nights to read, The (Fairly) True Tale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Each Friday during homeroom, there will be time for the students to turn and talk to answer trivia questions about the book.
- Please read to page 58 by Thursday, February 20.
- Please try not to read ahead so everyone at school may participate together.
When we return from break, all students can enter into a twice a week raffle for chances to take home a mini dwarf and the dwarf's journal. The students can take ONE picture of the dwarf on the Surface (You have to read to know what I mean! :) and write about the dwarf's adventure. The picture can be shared with Mrs. Russo via email. We will post the picture on the PTO Facebook Page and print out the photo to display it at school. Happy Reading!!
Congratulations Mrs. Grobert
Scholarship Award Renamed in Honor of Christine Grobert, LAF Teacher
On Saturday, at the Chatham Emergency Squad's Annual Officer Installation Dinner, the CHS Scholarship Award was renamed in honor of Christine Grobert.
An excerpt from the article:
"The renaming of the award honors Grobert, who retired from active service in December 2019 after 21 years of dedicated service. During her tenure, Grobert held many positions beyond that of President, including Vice President, Communications, Secretary, Uniforms Manager, Archivist, Weekend Crew Chief and more. Grobert was also the recipient of the 2019 EMT Excellence Awards by Overlook Medical Center."
Health Office Notes
This has been a tough winter for viruses here at Lafayette School. We are looking forward to the long weekend in hopes that the building can air out and rid itself of germs.
For the welfare of all our students, if your child is not feeling well, please consider keeping them home. We have noticed a trend this past month of children being given Advil or Tylenol before school in order for them to feel well enough to attend, only to spike a fever mid-morning.
Please remember that it is a district policy that a student be fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications before they can return to school. Let’s all work together to keep our school healthy!
On another note, Valentine’s day is tomorrow. Please remember no candy or food can be attached to the cards.
Give Back, Give Thanks
FROM THE CMS HEALTH OFFICE
All 5th graders entering Chatham Middle School next year as 6th graders need to provide proof of the following vaccines.
- Tdap vaccine(tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
- Meningitis vaccine (Meningococcal conjugate)
This is a NJ state requirement that must be fulfilled before the first day of school unless your child’s DOB is after the first day. These immunizations are usually administered at the 11yo healthy visit. Please send the documentation your pediatrician will provide as soon as they have completed their appointment. From now - June 12th send them to Sally Kelly RN at Lafayette Health Office. Begining on June 12th send to sbutler@chatham-nj.org (email is best). Please note some physicians offices book out quite a while so plan accordingly.
Your child will not have access to their 6th grade schedule this coming summer till this document is on file in the CMS Health Office.
Thanks!
