Mrs. Kirchner's 3rd Grade Leaders

May 1, 2016

Happy May!

I can't believe it is May 1st! This school year has gone extremely fast! It is because we have just had the most amazing year! I am going to have a difficult time letting go of all of them! We are down to the last six weeks and I know we can finish the year as STRONG as we started!

I apologize that I haven't sent a newsletter in several weeks. I have been busy with my classes at WCU, softball and soccer games, planning for the week, grading papers and cleaning my house! I will be thankful for a little breather this summer!

State Research Project

This past week they have been busy researching a state of their choice for a report they will begin this week. I think that is important that they begin sharpening their skills for research because it is a skill they will use a lot as they continue through their education. Also, I think it is important that they learn about the world. I remember being in fifth grade and researching Hawaii. I enjoyed every moment of it and learned a lot! I am hopeful that they will enjoy this project as much as I did and I look forward to sharing their finished product with you!

Homework

I decided this week that they need a break from homework. We work very diligently during the school day, so I need them to rest their brains at home. Their homework is to get outside and burn some energy. As long as they continue to work hard during the week in class, I will continue to not assign homework.

I ALWAYS feel very safe knowing I have these two in the class! Thank you Johnnie and TJ!

Reading

This week in reading we will reading Patricia Polacco's Pink and Say. Our focus will be using strategies to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar words. This is a difficult skill for many third graders, so I am going to place a lot of emphasis on this skill over the next few weeks.

Then, we will be reading Chicken Sunday and Rechenka's Eggs by Patricia Polacco. Can you tell I enjoy reading texts from this author? Again, we will be focusing on the vocabulary in the text. However, they will be using the words in a deeper more meaningful way when they complete a character study about the author.

Student-Led Conference Night!

Alicia and Evan came with their families to share with them their academic goal and discuss their progress this year! I was very impressed with both of them! They did such a fantastic job leading their conference! It was truly a reflection of their work in the classroom! Thank you for being in control of your learning!

Earth Day Project

Paper Bags: What Can I Do to Help Earth?

I was BLOWN away by the amount of talent we have in our class!!!!

These bags are an illustration of the dedication, hope and talent EACH of them have to offer the WORLD!!

We are BUCKET FILLERS in 3rd Grade!

I believe that our EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT is important to our daily success! It is vital that we all deposit something uplifting to the people we have in our lives! They had a chance to make deposits into their classmates bank account a couple weeks ago, even though I encourage this daily! It is that important!

Personally, I would like to thank a few parents for making deposits into my bank account this past week. I had a few very sweet emails that really lifted my spirits! Thank you so much for the kindness and encouraging words!
