EngageMath
Comprehensive Math Strategy, K to 12
Insπre. Gr8ness. 2gether.
To support the teaching and learning of mathematics, the Peel board has developed EngageMath, a three-year comprehensive numeracy strategy to help us achieve numeracy greatness. The strategy is intended to guide the major focus of our work over the next few years. It is built on three foundational drivers:
instructional focus
instructional strategies
assessment practices
The comprehensive plan calls for us to revitalize our Transformational Practices resources and identify the most current, effective, powerful instructional strategies in mathematics.
While the strategy plans out certain actions, it is by no means a magic bullet to answering the questions and challenges surrounding numeracy and student achievement. Mathematics achievement is a complex issue with many variables and success will require collaboration and the committed effort of all of us no matter our role, the grade or subject we teach.
Comprehensive Math Strategy, K to 12
Our three-year, comprehensive EngageMath strategy is available on the Mathematics page of the Curriculum & Instruction intranet site. There you will also find our Balanced Mathematics Instruction, K-12 poster and other math resources that support numeracy greatness.
COMING SOON: An EngageMath intranet micro-site (see landing page below) will replace the Mathematics page of the Curriculum & Instruction intranet site. The new micro-site, which will launch Oct. 10, 2014, will be your one-stop spot for all mathematics resources. Look for the EngageMath button/chiclet on your MySite page.
Attitudes about math matter
Like anything else, our talents and abilities in math are nurtured only if we have a growth mindset about them. Everyone is born with a math gene.
Balanced math program
Math tasks that add relevance to course material and provide learners with real-world connections encourage active learning.
Make thinking visible
Rich math tasks, like open-ended questions, make thinking visible and support problem-based numeracy success.
Tweeting up an #EngageMath storm
It's only been a month since we launched EngageMath. Impressively, Peel board tweeps have been busy tweeting up a math storm! Check out a few of the tweet highlights on our EngageMath Storify.
To keep up-to-date with EngageMath on Twitter, follow #EngageMath and #PeelMathChat. See the #PeelMathChat Storify from Sept. 25 on Math Phobia.
The next #PeelMathChat will take place on Oct. 23 from 8 to 9 p.m. and will focus on Making Student Thinking Visible. Everyone is welcome. "See" you there!
Ministry subsidies for Math AQs, ABQs, undergraduate prerequisite courses
The Ministry of Education, through the Ontario Teachers’ Federation (OTF), is providing a subsidy of $450 to teachers who successfully complete an Additional Qualification (AQ) or Additional Basic Qualification (ABC) course in Math or an undergraduate Math course that is a prerequisite for an AQ/ABC Math course. The following courses are subsized:
Mathematics, Primary and Junior - Part 1
Mathematics, Primary and Junior - Part 2
Mathematics, Primary and Junior - Specialist
Mathematics, Grades 7 and 8
Mathematics, Intermediate/Senior (ABQ)
Mathematics, Honours Specialist
Any undergraduate Math course that is prerequisite to the AQ/ABQ courses listed above
Ministry of Education funds dedicated to this initiative are limited, and subsidies will be provided on a first come first served basis. To learn more, contact OTF at 416-966-3424 or 1-800-268-7061, visit the OTF website at http://www.otffeo.on.ca/en/learning/4594-2/ or talk to your AQ/ABQ provider.

Meet the EngageMath team
The Peel board's Instructional Co-ordinator for Mathematical Literacy Mary Fiore and her team of Math Resource Teachers (Tina Grandy, Mashelle Kaukab and Matthew Oldridge) will support the implementation of EngageMath in Peel.
In addition, more than 60 instructional coaches have been deployed in Peel schools to support staff in focused professional development in the use of effective math instructional strategies.
