A Note from Our Principal

Dear North Beach Families:

Our teachers and staff find joy because of the work we do with our students. I observe daily teachers and support staff working together to find ways to support students’ academic and social emotional needs. It was so nice this week to see how much the community at North Beach appreciates the work our teachers and staff are doing, especially this year. Thank you so much!

At this week’s board meeting the School Board voted to amend Policy 2190, which involves Highly Capable Services. The policy now reads in part: Access to curriculum and opportunities, including access to highly capable services, should not be determined by a student’s race or neighborhood, and shall not be treated as a limited resource. As such, students in need of Highly Capable services will have equitable access to academically challenging and appropriate services, in their neighborhood schools or in the schools to which they are admitted through the open enrollment process.

On Monday, May 10, I’ll be hosting my monthly Principal Q&A hour. I’ve invited Deenie Berry, Advanced Learning Program Manager for the district, to attend. She will provide background information on the Advanced Learning program in SPS, then explain the process the Advanced Learning Task Force went through to make recommendations to the School Board. Finally, she will explain how the amended policy may affect neighborhood schools.

Meeting information: Monday, May 10. 7:00-8:00 p.m.

From the Office

Now is the time we start planning for the fall and a big part of that planning is having our enrollment numbers up as high and as true as possible. We plan our classrooms and teacher assignments all around enrollment. If we don’t have enough students enrolled, we are in danger of losing teachers and other staff members. To that end, we need everyone to enroll their students in SPS as soon as possible, like, yesterday. If you have a younger child you are planning on having attending North Beach, please go online to https://www.seattleschools.org/admissions/registration and enroll your student today. If you have friends, neighbors, family who are coming to North Beach, make sure they are registered. Questions? Please reach out: sbbradley@seattleschools.org or cmhostetler@seattleschools.org.

Counselor’s Corner

We’re a few weeks into our new school schedules, and most students seem to have made a smooth transition. If this is not the case for your child, I’m here to support. As always, if you have any concerns you’d like to discuss about your student, please e-mail me at arreid@seattleschools.org or leave a message at 206-252-1535.

I’ve started a lunch group on Wednesdays from 11-11:30 am for 3rd-5th grade students in the C Cohort and have e-mailed links to students and parents. This is a time for kids to connect with peers in a fun, relaxed way with time for conversation and games. If your child is in the remote learning model and you think they might benefit from more social time with peers, please encourage them to check it out.

COVID-19 Vaccines Available!

Hello North Beach Families and Friends,

This is Nurse Saga writing to inform you that if you are ready and want a vaccine, or if you need a second vaccine given to you closer to Seattle, the University of Washington Medical Center has open appointments.

The UW Medical Center is a first shot Pfizer location, meaning if this is your first shot you will only be able to receive PFIZER, but if you need a second shot of Moderna we do have Moderna available for those who need a second shot. A second appointment at UWMC for Pfizer will be generated for you automatically after you receive your first dose.

If you or anyone you know who is 16 years or older is interested, please feel free to call 206-598-3000 to make an appointment. You do not have to be an existing patient of UW Medicine.

Thank you and be safe,

North Beach Appreciation Week

What a fantastic North Beach Appreciation we have had! The North Beach Elementary PTA would like to say thank you one more time (we really can't say it enough) to our staff and teachers. Their dedication, kindness, flexibility, and persistence makes North Beach the phenomenal school it is.

THANK YOU TEACHERS and STAFF!! We appreciate you! (you, you, you!)

The Big Give Update- A Campaign of Gratitude

Recently, The Big Give received another incredibly generous donation of $15,000. Words cannot express how truly honored we are to have such giving patrons for North Beach Elementary. This funding is put to critical use for our school counselor, tutors, classroom materials and technology, classroom stipends and mini grants, and so much more. The Big Give would like to honor our most charitable supporters with a campaign of gratitude.

Next week, at morning and afternoon pick up, be on the lookout for an opportunity to sign a thank you card or two for these donors. If you have an online student and/or are unable to sign the cards, we invite families and students to submit small thank you pictures that will be added to the thank yous to bigive@northbeachpta.org

Thank you to everyone who has donated to The Big Give, every single donation matters to our students. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

If you have not had the opportunity to donate to The Big Give, click here to make a donation today.

The legislature’s work goes beyond funding and they also passed bills to modify truancy requirements; prohibiting the inappropriate use of Native American names, symbols, or images as public school mascots, logos, or team names; increasing grant limits for early learning facilities; and extending the mastery-based learning workgroup.
