Synod Assemblies

Dear Partners in Mission,

As many of you know, we are quickly approaching the time of year when all 65 of the synods in the ELCA will hold their annual assemblies. The assemblies are where each synod does its annual business, and in many ways is a longer version of our congregational annual meeting. This year, the assembly for our synod, the Central States Synod (CSS), will be held in Wichita, June 2-4. Joining me at this year’s assembly representing Salem will be Sherry and John Owens. Following the assembly in early June, John, Sherry and I will make sure we share any news on the joys and concerns of the synod.

At the same time our synod is gathering, June 2-4, the Greater Milwaukee Synod (GMS) will be gathering in Kenosha, Wisconsin. One of the points of business in their synod this year is that it is time for them to vote for a new bishop. It is very exciting for me to share with you that one of our own Partners in Mission here at Salem will be involved in that process. The Reverend Jen Thomas was asked earlier this year to consider being a candidate for the Office of Bishop in the Greater Milwaukee Synod. After prayerful consideration, Pastor Jen agreed to be part of this process, along with seven other candidates. Please keep Pastor Jen and all of the Greater Milwaukee Synod in your prayers as they prepare to elect a new bishop in June.

If you would like to know more about the Bishop’s election process in the GMS, or if you would like to read Pastor Jen’s profile along with the profiles of the other candidates, you can click on the following link

Lastly, feel free to talk with Pastor Jen about this and if you like, please plan on joining us on April 20 during Cornerstone, 6:30 – 7:30 pm, in the Salem Café, to hear from her about this process and her vision for this potential call for Bishop.

Have a blessed day!

Shalom, Pr. Dave
