As always, these items are only $1 and all proceeds from these weekly sales go to the kids; supporting our maker space STEM lab, field trips, educational assemblies, and special school celebrations.

Just a reminder that Mystery Sale Wednesdays are still late start, so staff supervision begins at 8:20am.

Rascal Shirt & Sweatshirt Sale!

ORDERS ARE OPEN!

Order forms went home in Friday folders and are available in the front office. Online orders are also available, but will include an additional processing fee.

After trying a new vendor for our shirts last year, we are returning to our previous vendor with higher quality materials & design.

Each shirt shows our Rascal Mascot (Jerry the Racoon) holding a Salem Heights Elementary sign on a black background (not white as pictured). We cycle through Rascal Spirit colors every year, so it will be a few years before we sell black again.

Orders and payment are due by Thursday, December 12th.

At this time we are not shipping shirts to individual addresses. All shirt orders will be delivered to the school and sent home with students.

The PTC uses the proceeds from these sales to help fund field trips, classroom needs, family nights and more!

DENTAL SEALANT CLINIC

A couple weeks ago we sent home dental sealant paperwork. Dental sealants are a free service offered to all of our students by Capitol Dental Care. Please return your student's paperwork as soon as possible, marked with whether or not you would like your child to participate.

The clinic is the week of December 5, but for only as many days as it takes for the dental sealant team to serve all the students who participate. Generally, it takes them about 20 minutes per student.

Holiday Store Donations & Volunteers

We are in need of new or gently used items for our Holiday Store coming December 12-14! We are looking for Men's, Women's, & Children's items. There will be a donation box in the main hall by the office for donations.

What is the Holiday Store?

The Holiday Store is put on every year by volunteers for each student to be able to shop for 2 individuals in their family. Each item is handpicked by the student & wrapped by one of our volunteers. In order for this event to take place we need donations! We are always most in need of men’s items.

Volunteers

We need volunteers to carry on this wonderful Salem Heights tradition! Click the button below to sign up for one or more shifts. We do need all volunteers to have a background check on file with the district. If you are unsure of your background check status, please call the school office.

Regular Attendance Matters!

Missing a day or two of school may not seem like a big deal, but that time matters. If a student misses just two days of school a month, by the end of the year, that adds up to an entire month of lost instruction.

Every Day 24J PSA
Diariamente, todos los días en el Distrito 24J | Every Day 24J PSA Spanish

At Salem-Keizer Public Schools, we want all of our students to graduate prepared for successful lives. Students who regularly attend school are more likely to graduate, setting the stage for success in college and higher rates of employability.

Be there all day, every day in District 24J.

Repeat Articles

The following information is repeated from our last newsletter. Each month we'll retain a few articles we feel might be helpful to families, but we will label them as repeat info to prevent confusion.

Arrival and Dismissal at Salem Heights

(Repeated article from previous newsletter)

Because the safety of our students is always our main concern, we wanted to share a diagram of Salem Heights' arrival and dismissal procedures.

7:20-7:50 Student Arrival:

Enter on 4th Avenue (church parking lot) and drop your child off:

-- Underneath covered area at the church

  • Students can walk to the school entrance

-- Drive to the lower parking lot by Salem Heights Elementary

  • Stay in left lane only, right lane reserved for buses & daycare vans only
Big picture

2:20-2:35 Student Dismissal:

Enter on 4th Avenue (church parking lot) and either:

--Stay in church parking lot and drive to covered area at Salem Heights Church

  • Students will be escorted to the church steps and supervised by our staff

--Park in church parking lot; walk to steps or school to pick up student

Big picture

Tips for Smooth Arrival/Dismissal:

  • At pick-up we will ask for ID if we don't know the pick up person

  • Please do not park along red curbs or on the west side of the church near 4th Avenue

  • The pick-up line often extends into the streets, please be patient as the line moves

  • Please don’t park in neighbors’ driveways at any time, even if the driveway is open

  • Don’t block streets, stop in intersections or crosswalks, and please obey crossing guards’ instructions

  • Remind children to stop and look both ways before crossing streets, and to respect neighbors’ property – for example, don’t make shortcuts through neighbors’ yards

  • When lining up to pick-up or drop-off students, leave at least three feet of space between your car and the nearest driveway opening

  • Please drive slowly. Remember, the speed limit in a school zone when lights are flashing is 20 miles per hour.

We are fortunate that Salem Heights Church next door that is so cooperative and generous in helping us with our parking issues. Please help us keep that a positive relationship by being considerate of their property and rules, and encouraging your children to the do same.

Managing School Communication Notifications

(Repeated article from previous newsletter)

We know the number of district and school communications can be overwhelming
. Our school tries to limit messaging to just what you need. Here is a quick tip to weed out non-essential ParentSquare communications:

In the ParentSquare App:

Start by opening the Menu

You can now adjust your notification preferences by school. Our recommendation is to turn on instant text notifications for your child's school and put the "Salem Keizer Public Schools" district notifications on digest to your email. Digest means you will receive all notifications from the day between 6 and 6:30pm.

This means you know any text notification will be immediately relevant to your school and child, and prevents those messages from become "white noise".

Whatever level of communication you choose, urgent notifications of weather or safety hazards will always be immediately pushed through, never delayed.

Label to Reduce our Lost and Found!

(Repeated article from previous newsletter)

Last year we donated loads of Lost and Found items that were never claimed. Please take a few minutes to label your student's jackets, water bottles, and lunch box to ensure they find their way home to you.

FAKE FENTANYL: What parents & students need to know

(Repeated article from previous newsletter)

Oregon has lost several students to fentanyl in the last few years. Linked below are fact sheets to help educate students, parents and the community about the dangers of fake pills made from deadly fentanyl.

FENTANYL BEING DISGUISED AS CANDY

Fentanyl is currently very common in our community; it is a powerful synthetic opioid that is like morphine but is 50 to 100 times more potent. Fentanyl is odorless, tasteless and colorless. Young people think they are taking “blues,” OxyContin or Xanax, but they are often taking pills laced with fentanyl. Recently, law enforcement agencies have also warned about the danger of fentanyl being disguised as candy, specifically targeted to be sold to children.
