LSES Weekly Update
WEEK OF NOVEMBER 1 - 6
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Our amazing teachers continue to work diligently to assess the needs of each student and ensure they have a successful year. Teachers will be getting ready for conferences this Friday grading assessments and preparing information to be shared with you. It is important for parents to know their student's accomplishments and the goals that have been set up for them for the next quarter. Teachers know that parental support is crucial to ensure student's success, and are eager to meet you and work together to provide the best opportunities for our students.
Sleep and Your Child
Did you know sleep is closely related to academic success? And did you know that school-aged children need 10 or 11 hours of sleep per night? Sleep deprivation may cause mood and behavioral issues as well as negatively impact memory, attention/reaction time, decision making and creativity; all of which can impact school success. Restful sleep can have a positive impact on attendance which is also closely tied to academic achievement.
Ways to Improve sleep:
· Develop a consistent bedtime routine, including a regular sleep schedule – your child should go to bed at the same time every night; for instance, reading to your child, even for just five minutes, is a way of getting-one-on-one time and providing a soothing bedtime routine.
· Set up a peaceful sleep environment- removing televisions or other forms of technology is strongly suggested.
· Limit television, games, computers at night – students should not have access to these technological devices within an hour of going to bed.
· Avoid foods/drinks that impact sleep – sodas, tea, or sugary foods can prevent restful sleep
· Contact your child’s doctor if you are concerned – contact your physician if your child has difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or exhibits problems while sleeping (excessive snoring, sleep walking, etc.)
