A Note from the Principal’s Office…
Thanks to all that helped make this school year such a success. Staff, students and volunteers worked to accomplish goals and reach new levels of student success. We now have two years of fully implemented, Common Core aligned, reading and math standards and are reaping the benefits of the added rigor, problem solving opportunities, and real-world applications. Madison students are well on their way to college and career readiness.
S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Fun… Thanks to our partnership with the Center for Gifted/Worlds of Wisdom and Wonder we are receiving 6 FREE in-house fieldtrips this June 1-8. Grades 3-5 will learn to extract DNA from strawberries and construct double-helix molecules. Grades K-2 will dive into Lego robotics by coding and programming a Lego creation. Check our social media this June for pictures. Don’t forget to register for Madison's World of Wisdom and Wonder Summer Program on June 15-26.
Summer “To Do” List… As you make your summer plans, please be sure to remember how important it is for everyone to continue reading and practicing math facts each day. We need your help to ensure that students retain their reading and math skills and love for literature. Here are some summer reading and math tips to consider this summer:
- Encourage your child to read almost anything: comic books, cartoons, magazines, etc.
- Set a daily family reading time.
- Wheaton Public Library Summer Programs.
- Visit the Wheaton Public Library on Tuesday mornings in July! Madison staff will be there from 9-11 a.m. to read with kids and help them find great books.
- Make sure your children know reading is an important part of your life. Let them “catch” you reading often.
- Create a book-a-month club. Have everyone in the family read the same book.
- Work daily on Xtra Math. Earn certificates and bring them back to school.
- Learn new concepts with Khan Academy.
Last Day of School… The Board of Education recently decided that Mon., June 8 will be the last day of school. It is a full day and report cards may not go home before Monday. If your child can not attend school on Monday, our office will be open to retrieve student items and report cards through June 17.
Changes in Teaching Assignments... There are some teachers on the move this year. First and foremost, we celebrate the retirements of two career educators. Congratulations to Mrs. Menzel and Mrs. Jacobs! Unfortunately, we also bid farewell to Mrs. Stewart and Ms. Gjeldum. They will be teaching at Longfellow Elementary next year. These changes have caused shifts within the assignments at Madison. Next year, Ms. Fograse will join the first grade team and Mrs. Schroeder will join the second grade team.
Have a safe and restful summer!
Tim Callahan

Best wishes to retiring staff
The Madison community would like to recognize two long-term members of staff for their dedication throughout the years to our school and to District 200. We wish them all our best in their retirement.
Karen Jacobs came to Madison in 1997 when her youngest daughter (she has four grown children) went to college. For 13 years she worked with Diane Graham in the computer lab, which was then housed in what is now Mrs. Graham’s office. She taught keyboarding and computer skills to children in all grades.
For the last five years Mrs. Jacobs has worked as an inclusion aide in 3rd and 4th grade. She has truly enjoyed her tenure at Madison and will greatly miss the staff. She has formed great friendships and she says she will miss the daily interaction. Working with children in all grades and being one of those teachers that all the kids knew were two of her biggest joys. She plans to spend time enjoying her hobby – sewing and quilting – as well as visiting her children and grandchildren. She will also be attending her high school-aged grandchildren’s sporting events and there are many of those.
Pam Menzel came to Madison in 1995 as a resource teacher. Off and on during summer breaks she taught summer school for kids ranging in age from kindergarten through middle school. She thoroughly appreciates children and their different senses of humor. Each stage of development brings new nuances to her interactions with them. Mrs. Menzel has enjoyed seeing how children give of themselves and how they love to help their friends.
In retirement, she and her husband hope to spend more time with grandchildren in Michigan and plan to take advantage of travel opportunities throughout the entire year now that she will no longer be restricted to a school vacation schedule.
Congratulations on your retirement, Mrs. Jacobs and Mrs. Menzel. Best wishes from your Madison family!

Social and Digital Media Parent Survey
For the past several years, District 200 has offered a series of Parenting Seminars each semester to provide resources and tools to parents on a variety of topics. More recently, parents have expressed a heightened interest in resources and support surrounding their child's use of social and digital media.
To assist our district in providing parent resources and seminars that empower parents to feel educated and confident parenting in our world of social and digital media, we ask all parents to complete this survey.

Pre-Order 2015-2016 school supplies
Do you hate the thought of running all over town to find the right supplies? The PTA is selling school supply kits for next year. This is offered as a convenience for parents, not as a PTA fundraiser.
All Madison students will bring home a school supply order form in the next week. Paper orders are due on May 29, while online orders are due June 5.
All families are encouraged to order online at www.schoolsuppliesamericaonlineorders.com; however, paper orders will be accepted for those families without computer access. School supply kits will be delivered to your child's classroom by Aug. 17. If you have any questions, please email Kathryn Medanic at MadisonSchoolSupplies@gmail.com.
Multicultural Day needs you
