The Compass

Week of September 6, 2021

Navigation Notes

Greetings Westside Families! Thank you to the almost 200 families who joined us for our Open House last week and provided your input on how Westside can positively grow. We will be announcing the winners of our drawings this week!

Please see more information below about the Emergency Mask Policy enacted by our School Board last Tuesday. If you have questions, please feel free to reach out to me personally at the contact information below.

This week, we are exploring the meaning of ORGANIZATION during class convention. Be sure to ask your child how they stayed organized each day at school!

Per BPS Guidelines, if your child is not feeling well, please keep them home. We are continuing our efforts to social distance when possible and deep clean all learning environments.

Finally, if you have not "liked" us on Facebook (Westside Elementary), please sign up to get the latest updates and photo posts of all the great things happening around campus.

Emergency Mask Policy Updates

As shared by BPS in various mediums, students in grades PK-12 are required to wear a face covering while indoors unless they are eating, have a medical exemption, IEP/504 services or needs that exempt them from wearing one, or permitted by a supervising staff member while maintaining 6ft or more of social distance.

**Please note that BPS is not honoring the "Opt Out" letters and forms, but I am happy to work with you on obtaining one of the exemptions listed above.** The 5-day grace period to obtain the necessary documents will end on Tuesday, 9/7 and students will need to either have their exemptions or a face covering in place on Wednesday. Again, I am here to discuss if you have questions, but I cannot change or override the policy set forth by our governing body.

i-Ready Diagnostic #1 Continues This Week!

Your children have done a wonderful job on their i-Ready thus far! This week, students in grades 1-6 will begin their MATH diagnostic via i-Ready. This assessment will provide rich and helpful data to our school to best serve your children. Please encourage them to do their VERY best so they are placed in learning groups appropriately and receive the support and/or enrichment tailored specifically to their needs.

Families will receive student scores with their upcoming Interim Reports.

Westside Explorers Are Learning Every Moment of Every Day!

During PE this week, students focused on LEADERSHIP! Working together, they created words that described strong character traits of leaders.
First Grade students in Mrs. Goolsby's class started their "living things" books with facts on spiders.
Fourth Graders in Mrs. J. Baker's class have been working on observations and inferences by creating test tube "lava lamps". They also worked in teams outside to learn about food chains by showing how energy flowed in the food chain from the sun to producers (algae-which was centimeter cubes in the grass) to consumers (shrimp, fish, and heron- which were the students).
PreK students in Ms. Artman's class explored the school on a "Shapes Scavenger Hunt"! They had to find, tally, and count the different shapes they discovered throughout the campus.

Please send a reusable water bottle with your child daily!
