Mask Parade

Students are eager to hold a Mask Parade this year, and we'll do it in a way that preserves our cohorts. The Mask Parade is scheduled during the time of Halloween, but it's not about wearing costumes. At Sycamore, students make their own themed masks associated with the classroom curriculum they've been studying. The Mask Parade is a way students can share what they've been learning with the rest of the school. I've included a picture of a past parade where a class focused on favorite book characters.

This year, we will film grade level cohorts as they have their own mini-mask parade . Then, we'll assemble these into a school video so everyone can watch the entire parade. We'll share the video with families the following week. We encourage you to make time for you and your student to watch it at home.

*Students should wear regular school attire. Halloween costumes should be saved for wearing at home.

Picture Retakes THIS WEDNESDAY

At the first of this week, students will receive a copy of their school pictures. Please take a look at these and decide if your child needs a retake. If you do want a retake, send the pictures back to school by Wednesday. Students who missed taking pictures in September will also take their picture at this time. If you have questions, contact Tina in the school office at thensley@cusd.claremont.edu. To order pictures, see www.schoolportraitsonline.com.

We will not be taking our all school picture on Wednesday. That picture will be taken in November.

PLAN AHEAD for FRIDAY'S DISMISSAL

Streets will be congested during this Friday's dismissal. Claremont High School will be celebrating homecoming this weekend, and the festivities begin during Friday's afternoon dismissal. The Homecoming Rally will be held at Memorial Park at 3:00 PM and the Homecoming Parade will start at 3:30 PM. Cars for the parade will begin lining up on 10th Street at 1:00 PM and that street will be blocked off to drivers. Parking will be tight and many high school students will be walking to the rally at the park. Driving and walking along YALE and 10th STREET will be affected. Please plan accordingly. Allow yourself additional time to park and walk up to pick up your student, especially at the Yale gate. If you're driving, pack your patience. If your student walks home, talk with them about these events and help them with any adjustments.

Gear POP UP

This Wednesday after school look for the GEAR POP UP TABLE. Parents will be on the Memorial Park side of the school from 1pm til 2pm. Please come and check out items from this year's design and from years past. Sizes and styles are limited. Please practice social distancing while waiting near tables.

Health Update

Dr. Wilson provided a CUSD health update in this week's Letter to the Community. You can find it in your email from Friday evening. The letter also summarized news from LA County's Department of Public Health and included links to additional information. Continue to look to Dr. Wilson's weekly letters for news on policies that affect students across the district.

I emailed a letter on Thursday evening notifying families that an individual who tested positive was present at the adults-only Sycamore Celebrates event last Saturday night. This type of general letter will be sent to families when we become aware of a positive case at our school or at a school event. Anyone who is considered a close contact would receive direct communication about that exposure.

When students experience COVID-like symptoms, they'll need to remain at home until symptoms improve and they have a negative COVID test.

CUSD offers COVID testing throughout the week.

Mondays: at El Roble from 2:00-4:00 PM or at Sycamore from 2:45-3:45 PM.

Tuesdays: at Vista del Valle Elementary from 2:45-3:45 PM.

Wednesdays: at Condit Elementary from 1:00-2:00 PM

Thursdays: at CHS from 3:30-5:00 PM

Before coming to the testing site, complete the one-time testing form.

You can report absences for illness, appointments or family business by emailing Norma at nperez@cusd.claremont.edu or by calling the 24-hour attendance line at 909-398-0325.

Rainy days ahead

On rainy days, students will enter school and move directly to classrooms to be screened. Barring extremely cold conditions or downpours, our plan is to have students eat outside in our covered hallways during rainy days. We ask that you send your child with a jacket so they are comfortable while eating outside. Please contact me directly with any concerns.

Treasurer Communication

When making a donation via check or Zelle, please use the memo section to specify what your donation is for (Syc Gear, Annual Fund Donation, Auction Item, etc.). This really helps us on the accounting side of things. Thank you!

CUSD Family Engagement Calendar

I want to remind you of CUSD's efforts to support students, staff and families. A host of online resources and workshops are available. See the CUSD Parent Resources and Links page for details. This Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at 6:00pm-7:00pm, community members will join to gain awareness about the impact of trauma within Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. Through an intersectional lens, the group will explore how to look beyond one' s experience and how historical and systemic factors influence our thinking as well as our emotional and collective well-being. register here.

Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who joined in on Sycamore Celebrates. The location, weather and company was excellent! We appreciate those who attended, donated items and tickets and purchased auction items. We are grateful to Last Name Brewery, event organizer, Jessica MacLachlan, and all who volunteered for set-up, take-down, and everything in-between. Governance Council would like feedback both from those who attended and those who did not attend. Your comments will help us plan events in the future. Please respond in this quick survey to share your thoughts and suggestions.
