ELA News

In Language Arts, students have started reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Even though many students have read this novel before, we are doing many different activities as we read each chapter. Recently, students have been learning to make inferences about Percy. Students are able to take what they already know and combine it with new information read to produce an inference. Students are also working hard on new vocabulary. Without using a dictionary, students are learning how to use context clues, root words along with prefixes to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words. Soon, students will also know how to complete a word model to help better their understanding of unknown words!

Students will almost be reading a chapter from the novel every night. As a parent, you can help enforce reading at home by asking your child what the chapter was about or even their favorite scene from that chapter!

Social Studies Updates

Our students this year are lucky to have some brand new books to read from! To start out the year, our students are getting a better understanding of history by learning some important terms. After learning also learning about geography, students will then jump into Ancient Greece. As students learn about Greece, they will enhance their understanding of the country and how the ancient civilization helped further technology for future cultures.

I am very excited to teach about Greece! I was able to visit Athens, Crete and Katakolon this summer! I have so many pictures of the original place of the Olympics along with some special temples that I was able to see. I can't wait to share all my experiences with the students this year!
