Halloween Celebration Recap
A special thank you to EPIC and Mrs. Caswick for organizing out Halloween celebrations. Thank you to all the parent volunteers who came in to help. We had a great time and we appreciate putting it together for us!
Parent/Teacher Conferences Recap
Thanks you to all parents/families who participated in Parent/Teacher Conferences the last few days. Report Cards will be sent home on December 2. Continue to communicate with yoru child's teacher and we will do the same with you.
We encourage you to connect with your child about school. If looking for things to ask, here are 10 great questions:
1. Tell me about the best part of your day.
2. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
3. Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
4. Tell me about what you read in class.
5. Who did you play with today? What did you play?
6. Do you think math [or any subject] is too easy or too hard?
7. What's the biggest difference between this year and last year?
8. What rules are different at school than our rules at home? Do you think they're fair?
9. Who did you sit with at lunch?
10. Can you show me something you learned (or did) today?
Erin's Law- Sexual Assault/Abuse
Erin’s Law, House Bill 6193 was signed by Governor Pat Quinn on January 24, 2013. This law requires schools to implement an age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention curriculum for grades pre-K through 12. It is recommended that four communications a year on Erin’s Law be made available to all students.
Victor Pacini, a survivor of sexual abuse, author and motivational speaker, will be assisting our school in implementing this mandate. Mr. Pacini’s program is developmentally appropriate, interactive, and aligned with learning standards. The focus of his presentation is to teach children basic skills to keep them safe from dangerous or abusive situations. The concepts that will be discussed are:
Distinguishing safe from unsafe touches
Safety rules at home and school
Saying “NO”
Safe/Unsafe Secrets
It’s not the child’s fault if someone touches him or her
Telling a trusted adult
See below for video on what concepts will be covered for each grade level.
Mr. Pacini 's colleague, Deanna Hynes, will be presenting at Millburn Elementary on Thursday, November 10.
Requests to Opt-Out: If you prefer that your child opt-out of this prevention education session, please email your child’s classroom teacher.
Veteran's Day
On Friday, November 11, we will be honoring Veteran's Day at Millburn Elementary. First, we will be providing a luncheon for local veteran's that have ties to our Millburn community. Then, we will have a Veteran's Day parade around the school honoring our guests. From there, the Veterans will be able to visit classrooms to talk with students.
In addition, El Camino restaurant, owned and operated by one of our Millburn families, has given us Veteran's Day themed coloring pages for students to complete. For every completed coloring page, El Camino will donate $1 to Midwest Veteran's Closet. As a thank you to coloring the pages, the bottom of the coloring page has a coupon for a free kids meal to El Camino.
