Month of January
FOURTH GRADE HAPPENINGS...
The fourth grade came back to school excited for the things we are going to learn this last half of the year. We are working on Division in math. In English we have begun the 4th Module about Heroic Feats - things people do that make them heros. In Social Studies, we are beginning to work on our Kansas State Social Studies Assessment. We have experienced the Dust Bowl on a field trip and seen videos and information about the Dust Bowl. We are beginning to work on our Claim, Reasoning, and Evidence graphic organizers that will help us produce our final presentation. We are
having a great start to the second half of our year. After we took our FastBridge Tests, our teachers told us that we did a really great job and improved a lot on our assessments. We are proud of our accomplishment and look forward to learning even more before the end of our fourth grade year!
The attached photo is one of our field trip where we learned about what people went through in the Dust Bowl. The air was thick and hard to see through just like it was during the Dust Bowl.

Speech Happenings
The Irving Speech Team, Ms. B, and Mary Kilcher are using lesson plan materials provided by PRC-Saltillo. This is a company that is very active in making assistive communication technology available to a broader range of students and adults. The consultants have combined literacy, using children’s literature, with food and art this calendar year.
We started out by reading the book “Dragons Love Tacos” by Adam Rubin. Then the students had a fun time making tacos out of tissue paper and ribbon toppings representing lettuce, tomato, and cheese inside a paper plate taco shell. We will be making paper bag dragon puppets to finish out the month's theme.
The Speech Team is demonstrating how ACC devices generate
communication. They will demonstrate how ordinary people can
effectively communicate with persons using such devices. It is the
Speech Team’s effort to get our students at Irving to use their “talkers”
and to have Irving students feel comfortable talking to such users.
