SM Parents As Teachers Newsletter

October 2019

Making Connections

I have enjoyed visiting with several families who are part of our Parents as Teachers program during play center and parent education offerings. We invite all of our families, whether you receive home visits or are not currently receiving home visits, to join us for weekly play center or the activity and parent education offerings provided by our parent educators and our PAT PTA. These are great opportunities for you to connect with other families.

Our goal is to offer high quality services through the Parents As Teachers program. Please contact me, leighanneneal@smsd.org or 913-993-6412, with any questions or feedback regarding the program.

Announcing a Change in Play Center Hours

We hope you will join other Shawnee Mission families for fun at the play center, located in the SM Early Childhood Education Center, 6701 W. 83rd Street. In response to your feedback, we are making a change in our play center to welcome all children under the age of 36 months during play center hours on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Be sure to mark your calendars for an opportunity to connect with other families and make play center a part of your weekly routine. Tuesday Mornings:

9:30-11:30 a.m.: All children under the age of 36 months

Wednesday Mornings:

Did you know there is a SM Parents as Teachers PTA?

Shawnee Mission is proud to be the first Parents as Teachers program in the country to have its own PTA, a parent volunteer organization. The SM PAT PTA organizes many fun activities and events for families throughout the year. Some of these events include Messy Morning, Fire Station Tour, Holiday Make and Take, Little Gym Play, Movin' and Groovin', Explore with Animals, and the Public Works Tour. The PAT PTA covers the cost of these events through annual dues or fees to attend the events. As a PAT PTA member, your family may participate in PTA events at no cost.
