Principal's Message

Dear Adelante Selby Spanish Immersion families,

We are entering into the last part of the school year and I am excited about our upcoming first big in-person, family community events on campus at the end of this month: the Science Fair/STEM night on April 21, and the Día Del Niño event on April 30th! Speaking of families, and a good activity with Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, I want to highlight and "SHOUT OUT!" a few families and students who recently cleaned up trash at our school over the Spring Break as a Community Service Project. Last Monday morning a parent and Kindergarten student came and visited me with a hand written letter by the Kinder student advocating to get rid of the plastic straws and plastic straw wrappers that have been used this year for the orange and apple juice containers. They want us to use cartons similar to the milk cartons that do not have the straws/plastic wrappers and eliminate that waste. One of the parents explained to me: " As context for where all this came up, our family gets together with a group of other families with young kids on a regular basis to think about how we can create an environment for our children to develop their virtues and contribute to a stronger community. The children recently decided to do a service project, and since several of them go to Adelante Selby, decided to focus on picking up trash around the school. When we did this service project yesterday, several of them noticed the large number of plastic straw-wrappers we found, which led to a conversation of how this could be changed. This then prompted Damien to write you the letter he gave you this morning:

"Dear Director Warren and SubDirectora Pati

On the third of April I did a service project with my community and friends including Wesley, Cedric, and Eleanor. We picked up trash at Adelante Selby. We found a lot of plastic wrappers of juice box straws. Can we have juice boxes without straws like the milk boxes? This will reduce the trash in our school and animals will not eat the wrappers.

Yours sincerely

Damien"

What a GREAT idea! I have forwarded the request to Child Nutrition Services to see if they can go back to the cartons for the apple and orange juice to eliminate the plastic straws and plastic wrappers.

Please take a look at the slide deck from the last Principal's Cafecito which includes a LOT of important information including an update on our Alebrije School Mascot artwork( which is almost finalized!) and a few videos of students in classes as well

We no longer require the Daily Wellness Checks to be submitted for students(our staff will have to continue to do the Wellness checks). Parents are now able to walk onto campus to drop off and pick up their child(ren), but not enter the school buildings or classrooms. You can walk them to the line up area in the morning and wait for the teachers to come pick up the class. This is a good way to meet other parents and get better connected to our school community. Reminder if you want to walk in to drop off or pick up your child, please make sure to be respectful to our neighbors and park legally outside the parking lots along Himmel, Atherwood, or Selby Lane(DO NOT BLOCK our neighbors driveways).

CASSPP State Testing 3rd-5th Grades

CAASPP & CST: Testing Window May 3-May 20th

California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). This test is for English Language Arts and Math. It also includes a Performance Task where students need to read 3 sources, answer questions, and then write an informative, persuasive, or a narrative essay. Parents you can help prepare your child(ren) with the Release Questions:

Reading Test Prep Practice Release Questions:

Math Test Prep Practice Release Questions:

Additionally, the 5th Grade is the only grade level that takes the California Science Test (CST) and the Physical Fitness test (Both of which are part of the CAASPP).

Our TK and Kindergarten Playground will be getting a new Play Structure and Swing Set as the last stage of the Bond improvements for our school. Unfortunately, this means over the next few weeks the Kinder play area will be fenced off and not available for use. We will adjust our routine with the TK/K students so they have a place to play during the Recess and Lunch times during this short time frame. We expect the new Play Structure and Swing Set project to be completed and ready for use by the end of April.

Science Fair

We are excited and gearing up for the Science Fair on April 21, 2022 from 5:00-6:00pm in the 3rd-5th classrooms!

For parents of children in Grade 3-5, we have made poster boards and instructions available for the students last week for them to begin to construct their display boards. These were handed out in the classrooms. (K-2 sign ups are completed and they received the display boards)

A Tutorial for making a poster board for the science fair is here.

Please email stemfair@unidospto.org with any questions!

STEM Night 6:00-7:30 in the Cafeteria

Volunteers needed for an in-person STEM Night on the evening of April 21! Parents will lead stations with interactive science exhibits. Some exhibits will be provided, although parents are welcome and encouraged to devise their own exhibits. (Assistance can be provided for setting up stations.) Volunteers will need to comply with the RCSD volunteer policy.

STEM Nights have been big hits in previous years, and we're hoping this one will mark a joyous return to campus for many parent volunteers. But WE NEED YOUR HELP - so far we have only a few volunteers, and won't be able to field a large event without more hands. Please consider helping out!

Questions about STEM Night? Please reach out to Rory Sayres (sayres@gmail.com)

If you would like to volunteer to help with the Science Fair or STEM Night, fill out this form.

Student Absence Reporting Form

In order to facilitate communication with the school and save time when your child is absent for any reason, we want all families to use the Student Absence Reporting Form in lieu of calling the office. You will notice the form does not have a place to enter the date and that is because it has a time stamp when it is completed. Our Office Staff can more efficiently go through the form and excuse absences in our Powerschool system. If there are any questions, particularly around Covid cases, we will call you directly for more information.
