UMAC NEWS.............May 1st

Mrs. Barrett & Mrs. Wiley

Dear UMAC Families,

Next week concludes all of our testing in UMAC! As a rewards for our student’s hard work and determination the last two months, Mrs. Marks and Mrs. LaShelle are going to host a PARCC Picnic outside during lunch on Thursday, May 7th. The students and teachers will eat lunch with our fabulous administrators to celebrate their efforts (and that testing is finally over)! Please remember to pack a sack lunch if you did not sign up for a special lunch through the cafeteria on Thursday.

Our Moraine Hills Field Trip is next Friday. We will be leaving Woods Creek around 9am and returning around 2pm. Please encourage your son/daughter to dress appropriately for the weather (hopefully sunny) and a 3 mile hike! All students will need a sack lunch on Friday!

Thanks for your constant support!

Michelle Barrett

Science Investigations

This week in science, students have been working in groups to successfully grow their terrariums. We’ve been talking about living and nonliving environmental factors that are affecting the growth of our plants. It has been exciting to watch our plants grow and change over the last week. We will continue learning about environments in preparation for our science field trip next Friday.

What a Celebration of reading! Book Club Round One was completed today!

It was fun to share and discuss this historical event with our students, especially since they have so much schema from shared reading! We’ve decided to do another round of book clubs with our new WWII novels. Students will receive a new novel and group on Monday. Just like last rotation, any student who is unprepared for book club two times will lose the privilege of having the valuable book discussions with their team. Please help us in reminding your child the importance of taking ownership for their own learning!

Growing Up Unit Begins week of May 11th for Old Friends

This is a reminder that our OLD friends will be participating in the Growing Up lessons for three weeks during his or her STEM Encore class. During the week of May 11, the lessons will cover the Endocrine System and the role that hormones play in the daily function of our bodies. Erin’s Law will be covered during the week of May 18 with the emphasis on ways to say no to uncomfortable situations and inappropriate touches. Finally, students will read an article about puberty and the co-ed movie will be shown during the week of May 25. Please contact Mrs. Krutsch, the STEM teacher, with any questions you may have.
