In 1962, Bobby "Boris" Pickett released the novelty song Monster Mash that actually reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year! With tomorrow being Halloween, it seems only fitting that we bring it back 60 years later to open this week's edition.

I was watching Hobart sports, the last few nights ...

When my eyes beheld some amazing sights ...

For the Brickies from their locker room, began to shine ...

And somehow the lyrics still rhyme

... you take it from here :)

No question about it, the Brickies were SCARY GOOD this past week in sports! With a chance to compete for a 'ship on the gridiron and one last race on the state's biggest stage, the timing was right for some spooktacular performances!!

Ok, that's a frightening amount of puns ... it's time for BricksCenter!

Cross Country

On Saturday, Brickie freshman Cassie Cohen was one of 204 competitors to descend on LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute for the 42nd running of the IHSAA Girls Cross Country State Finals! It was an absolutely B-E-A-UTIFUL morning for a race and Cassie took full advantage of the unusually warm October weather!

Paired with IHSAA semi-state champion Lillian Zelasko from New Prairie HS in box #39, Cassie bolted full-speed away from the start line when the gun went off! Through the first mile of the race, Cassie positioned herself among the top 50 runners and RAN STRONG on the challenging course with rolling hills!! With family, teammates & Brickie fans cheering her on at every turn, Cassie was simply PHENOMENAL in traversing the 3.1-mile course among the best in Indiana ... passed 3 competitors on the home stretch ... and finished 40th overall in a time of 19:16.5!!! INCREDIBLE!!!

Cassie's time of 19:16.5 is the 2nd fastest 5k for a Brickie at the State Finals! Even more impressive is where she stacked up in Indiana on Saturday ... 6th fastest freshman, 21st fastest underclassman ... and she beat 6 girls who placed higher than her at last week's semi-state! WHAT A DAY!! WHAT A RACE!!!

CONGRATULATIONS Cassie! The entire Brickie Nation is VERY PROUD OF YOU!!!

What a perfect way to wrap up the fall IHSAA season of running for our Brickie harriers :)

Football

On Friday night, the Brickies were on the road at Sypult Field to face the Highland Trojans in an IHSAA Sectional 17 semifinal contest. Back on October 28th, our boys defeated the NCC rival Trojans by a score of 41-7. With a shot at playing in the sectional championship on the line ... you knew both teams would bring their best!

In a very competitive first half, Hobart led by a slim 4-point margin at 14-10. Less than 30 seconds into the 2nd half, Highland brought the home fans to their feet with a 68-yard score to go ahead 17-14. The Brickies bounced back quickly ... taking less than 2 minutes off the clock to drive the field and score on a 21-yard TOUCHDOWN pass from sophomore QB Noah Ehrlich to senior wideout Cody Johnston! Later in the 3rd, sophomore Kael Schlosser blocked a Highland punt, scooped up the pill and sprinted 40 yards untouched into the endzone for another BRICKIE TOUCHDOWN!!!

After taking a 28-17 lead, the Brickie D-D-D-DEFENSE forced another Trojan punt and our boys got the ball back with 90 yards between them and paydirt with just over 2 minutes remaining in the quarter. Hobart worked the 2-minute drill to near PERFECTION ... drove down the field ... and SCORED AGAIN when senior tailback Trey Gibson broke free and scampered into the endzone from 44 yards out!! When senior kicker Ryan Pimentel booted the extra point through the uprights, it was 35-17 BRICKIES!!!

Each team would add one more score in the final period and Hobart returned home with a 42-25 VICTORY!! Gibson led the offensive attack with 34 carries for a whopping 263 yards and 3 touchdowns to help our boys advance to the IHSAA SECTIONAL FINALS for the 4th consecutive year!!

Hobart is now 8-3 on the season and will host Class 4A #6 New Prairie on Don Howell Field @ The Brickyard next Friday night!! Kickoff is scheduled for 7pm and tickets will be $7. I would get there early if I were you ... this one should be FUN!!!
