The Week at a Glance

Good Evening Westlake Families,

The school year has kicked off with a blast and we are off to a good start!! We were so excited to welcome our students back into the building. I want to give a few shout-outs:

Shout-out #1: Westlake Softball parents for making major improvements to the softball facility and field. Things are looking MUCH better because of your hard work and commitment to improving Westlake Softball.

Shout-out #2: Westlake Magnet Booster Club for sponsoring lunch for our counselors and student service team during this hectic enrollment time.

Shout-out #3: Westlake Band Booster for purchasing a utility golf cart for the Marching Lions.

We are currently implementing a plan to relieve the congestion in the hallways, lunchroom, bus lane, and car rider lane. Over the next few weeks we rollout different phases of the plan. This upcoming week we will start with dismissal to address the bus lane and car rider lane. Beginning Monday, August 16th we will dismiss students with 4th Block classes upstairs (Rooms 150 - 199, 250 - 299, 358, 450 - 499, 551 - 553) at 3:20 pm. Bus riders will exit the building by using the back stairwell and exiting through the exterior doors to gain access to the bus lane. Car riders/drivers will exit the building through the auditorium lobby by using the stairwell 550 or the gymnasium lobby by using the stairwell adjacent to the auxiliary gym. Students will need to gather items from their lockers prior to 4th period. Students with 4th Block downstairs and in the modules will be dismissed at 3:30 pm.

A way that parents can assist with the car rider traffic flow is by the parents of quick departing students to wait in the pickup line and parents of slower departing students park and wait for their student versus creating a bottleneck in the pickup lane. Buses will be departing from Westlake High School beginning at 3:37 pm. Fulton County Schools' Transporation Department is working hard to ensure that buses arrive at Westlake prior to dismissal.

Should you have any questions or concerns at any point this school year, please do not hesitate to call, email, or come in to see me.

Kind Regards,

Jarvis I. Adams, Principal

Westlake senior Natalie Jacobs creates new logo for Fulton Academy of Virtual Excellence (FAVE)

During the 2021 Spring Semester the new Fulton Academy of Virtual Excellence (FAVE) asked for the assistance of creative students to utilize their talents to design the new FAVE school logo. The families of the FAVE community selected blue and silver as the school colors and an owl for their mascot. Therefore, a contest was hosted amongst North and South Fulton county students to design a logo that would appeal to their elementary, middle, and high school population. Our very own Natalie Jacobs(12th grade) created a very artistic digital design which won 1st place in this County-wide competition!! Please congratulate her when you see her in the hallway!

From the desk of Athletic Director Coach Green

What a busy first week of school for Westlake Athletics. The softball team opened up the season with a 19-4 win over South Cobb on Wednesday, August 11th at home. They then traveled to Creekside on Thursday and took care of their opponent in 3 innings winning 25-3. Our volleyball team defeated Stephenson on Thursday, August 12th, and traveled to Jonesboro Friday and lost a highly competitive series of matches 3-2. The football team traveled to Milton on Thursday to compete in the 6th annual FCS Gridiron scrimmage. This was a battle of #1 Milton vs #3 Westlake, we lost 35-21 after the game ended early in the 4th quarter due to lightning strikes. A Letter to the Fresh Class from Athletic Director Coach Green

Greetings Class of 2025,

I would like to personally welcome you to the Westlake High School Athletics Program. We recognize the importance of athletic activities in providing students with important opportunities for a total education. These activities teach students core values such as commitment, discipline, hard work, leadership, teamwork, and physical fitness; all of which are the foundation for academic success. Participation in athletic activities contributes to the physical, as well as, emotional and social health of our students. It also promotes a sense of unity and cooperation among athletes, the student body, and the Westlake community.

Westlake High School is a member of the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Region 4 of 6A classification. Our vision is to be a nationally recognized brand of student-athletes with global success. Westlake offers students the opportunities to participate in over 19 sports, which are all sanctioned by the National Federation of High School Sports (NFHS). Interscholastic programs are an important part of supporting students’ matriculation at Westlake High School. The athletics department at Westlake High School strives to produce well-rounded student-athletes with a drive for success. With a rich athletic tradition, such as a plethora of region and state championships, Westlake High School has graduated a multitude of student-athletes who have extended their talents at various collegiate and professional levels. Also, we recently won 2021 Geico National Championship in Girls’ Basketball. Westlake is the premier high school for interscholastic activities in the state of Georgia. COVID-19 Coronavirus Updates

At Fulton County Schools, we work daily to ensure the health and well-being of our students and staff in the midst of the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Here is the key info you need to know:

Student Discipline Update

Last week over 150 days of out-of-school suspension days were issued to students that violated the student code of conduct. We will use this section of the newsletter, to inform parents of trending discipline infractions and the supports that we need from parents.

The most prevalent infractions of last week were: 11a Drug possession, 11b Drug Paraphernalia, and 13a: Improper Dress. We were able to address the vast majority of violators before 8:45 am as students enter the building from their homes.

As we strive to provide the most conducive learning space, parental support is needed to ensure that students enter Westlake High School, not in possession of any controlled substance or possession of any drug paraphernalia, and follow the FCS student dress code.

Consequences for acts of misconduct regarding drugs/alcohol/controlled substance may include out of school suspension (up to 10 days) and a Disciplinary Hearing Referral with a recommendation for further actions such as long-term suspension, expulsion, and/or assignment to an alternative education program.

Improper Dress Rule 13a: Students in the school system are expected to dress and groom themselves in such a way as to reflect neatness, cleanliness, and safety. All students shall dress appropriately so as not to disrupt or interfere with the educational program or the orderly operation of the school. Examples of inappropriate dress and grooming include lack of cleanliness in person or dress; shoe lessness; "short-short" clothing; bare midriffs; "tank tops"; "see-through" clothing or apparel which designates gangs or similar organizations, head coverings for non-religious purposes (i.e. hat, hood, bonnet, bandanna, etc), or any dress that is disruptive to the educational process. Westlake High School administration shall determine whether any particular mode of dress or grooming results in a violation of the spirit and/or the intent of this rule. Consequences for Improper Dress range from a verbal warning to 5 days of In-School suspension.
