MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT LOWERY
Extended Learning Opportunities
Greetings OAUSD Educators,
Assembly Bill (AB) 86 introduced two new funding streams to school districts using Proposition 98 resources—the In-Person Instruction and Expanded Learning Opportunity Grants.
Here is the timeline for the ELO funds:
Mar 5th: AB 86 passed
Mar 25th: CDE finalized the template
April & May: Stakeholder Engagement
May 13th: Preliminary draft of ELO to School Board
by June 1st: School Board must formally vote to adopt a complete ELO plan (link to plan template).
*May 27th: OAUSD Board Meeting Date
The ELO grant has the following allowable uses:
1. Extending instructional learning time
2. Accelerating progress to close learning gaps through
the implementation, expansion, or enhancement of learning supports
3. Integrated student supports to address other barriers to learning
4. Community learning hubs that provide students with access to technology, high-speed internet, and other academic supports
5. Supports for credit deficient students to complete graduation or grade promotion requirements and to increase or improve students’ college eligibility
6. Additional academic services for students
7. Training for school staff on strategies to engage students and families in addressing students’ social-emotional health and academic needs
We are integrating stakeholder engagement related to the development of the Expanded Learning Opportunities Grant Plan into the ongoing LCAP stakeholder engagement process. As we discuss the goals and actions of the LCAP, the ELO grant provides supplemental funds to support students growth and progress. As you have team dialogue about the LCAP in staff meetings, we are asking all to also provide input for the ELO grant planning.

Unfortunately, Sonoma County has yet to meet the health criteria to advance to the Yellow Tier. While we are very close, we cannot meet the criteria based on the continued rate of new cases. Only a few new cases can prevent us from moving to the Yellow Tier. One possible source of infections and outbreaks is due to relaxed masking and social distancing among athletic teams. The county has seen outbreaks as a result. Athletic Directors, coaches, and student athletes are reminded that maintaining safety protocols are critical for individual and collective health and will help us all get to a point where these protocols will no longer be necessary. Additionally, vaccinating students and the greater community will help make sure sports can continue and reduce the need to quarantine.
New CDC Masking Guidance
The CDC on Thursday issued new masking guidance advising that fully vaccinated individuals do not need to wear masks in most settings. As a reminder, the CDC guidance is advisory and schools are still bound by the CA Department of Public Health (CDPH) guidance and CalOSHA guidance as it applies to employees. We will work with County Health officials to provide any updates as they pertain to schools in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, the current masking guidelines remain in place.
CURRICULUM AND PROFESSIONAL LEARNING
The STAR window closed on Friday. If you have any make-up tests to give, please send Director, Gina Lynch, an email, to open and get access to the test. Please note, you will need to hand input the score on the report card.
Report Cards - Attendance will be populated on the report cards on June 1 so that you can print them out on June 2nd or 3rd in order to give them to students on June 4. Wednesday, May 26, time has been set aside for teacher collaboration around report cards. We are working on a “blurb” for all teachers to put into the report cards regarding trimester 3. Students will be “held harmless” meaning their trimester 2 scores will roll over much like we did last year. More information on this to come!

Attaining educational equity for each students takes more than just vision--it takes courage and conviction from school leaders and educators. Equity sometimes requires unequal supports for students. While the goal is the same outcome for all students—promote students who are prepared to leave our system—the effort to get each student there will look different. Instead of trying to give each student the exact same experience and expect them all to graduate, we must figure out what each student needs to accomplish their educational goals.

FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
REGISTRATION AND ENROLLMENT
As educators we have been hearing more and more about social emotional health, self care and teacher wellness. In Old Adobe Union School District, self care and educator wellness was rising as a priority before the Covid pandemic began. After a year like no other, self care and emotional health and wellness are more important than ever.
Starting this week, please look for an Educator Wellness section in the weekly roundup each week. In this section you will find important information about educator wellness, resources and strategies that you can access and implement right away. In the coming weeks please also visit our new Educator Wellness section on our District website under Student Services.
This week Educator Wellness will focus on Self Compassion. According to self-compassion.org, self compassion is essentially having compassion for oneself. It is no different than having compassion for others. To have compassion for others you must notice that they are suffering so that your heart responds to their pain (the word compassion literally means to “suffer with”). Having compassion also means that you offer understanding and kindness to others when they fail or make mistakes, rather than judging them harshly. When you feel compassion you realize that suffering, failure, and imperfection is part of the shared human experience. Self-compassion involves acting the same way towards yourself when you are having a difficult time, fail, or notice something you don’t like about yourself. Instead of just ignoring your pain with a “stiff upper lip” mentality, you stop to tell yourself “this is really difficult right now,” how can I comfort and care for myself in this moment?
One effective strategy for self compassion is taking a self compassion break. An example of a Self Compassion Break:

Think of a situation in your life that is difficult, that is causing you stress. Call the situation to mind, and see if you can actually feel the stress and emotional discomfort in your body.
Now, say to yourself:
1. This is a moment of suffering
That’s mindfulness. Other options include:
This is stress.
2. Suffering is a part of life
That’s common humanity. Other options include:
Other people feel this way.
I’m not alone.
We all struggle in our lives.
Now, put your hands over your heart, feel the warmth of your hands and the gentle touch of your hands on your chest. Or adopt the soothing touch you discovered felt right for you.
Say to yourself:
3. May I be kind to myself
You can also ask yourself, “What do I need to hear right now to express kindness to myself?” Is there a phrase that speaks to you in your particular situation, such as:
May I give myself the compassion that I need
May I learn to accept myself as I am
May I forgive myself
May I be strong.
May I be patient
This practice can be used any time of day or night, and will help you remember to evoke the three aspects of self-compassion when you need it most.
