As we approach the second nine week grading period, we ask that you partner with us to promote the best learning experience for your child and ensure their academic growth. We continue to ask that you:
- Communicate with your child’s teacher
- Check and sign your child’s planner daily
- Set aside time and place for your child to complete homework
- Praise your child for their effort in academics and appropriate behavior
Teachers and staff work very hard to ensure students are successful and prepared for the world tomorrow. I thank you, our families, for what you do to support and ensure the success our students. We have lots of great events and activities to participate in at Miller Intermediate and I encourage everyone to get involve. Please take a moment to view our website and follow us on Twitter @MillerMavsAISD. Thank you.

Counselor's Corner
Reporting vs. Tattling: Mavericks can interrupt a bully by asking the victim to play or read with him/her. If he/she doesn't feel safe to do so, however, he/she should get the help of an adult immediately. When it comes to bullying, telling an adult isn't tattling. Make sure your child knows the difference: tattling gets someone in trouble while reporting gets someone out of trouble. Then, ask him to think of grown-ups he can go to if he sees bullying.
"Pull-Ups" vs. "Put-Downs": Encourage your child to say nice things to students who are teased. He might compliment a classmate on a presentation or ask if they want to sit together at lunch. His friendly words will act a "pull-ups" to help counter the "put-downs".
5th Grade News
We have been learning about Earth and how it has changed over time and continues. Mavericks have been engaged in hands-on and project based learning completing many experiments and investigations. We are incorporating the process of CER (Claim, Evidence and Reasoning) which allows students to argue what they have learned and how they can apply it to the natural world.
Reading
Our 5th grade Mavericks are gaining a vast amount of knowledge in Reading. They are learning the knowledge and skills required for the three genres of fiction poetry, and expository texts. These skills will help their literacy knowledge grow. Mavericks are encouraged to read every single day!
Math
Multiplication, division, and order of operations have come, but they are never gone! Mavericks are now using those skills to dive into fractions, decimals, and conversions. This is a struggle for many of our students. You can help your child by having them use these skills at home. Finding opportunities for them to work with fractions while cooking or measuring are some examples of ways to incorporate these skills in real-world situations.
Writing
We encourage writing to be incorporated in each subject. Mavericks will be working on two important pieces: response to text and expository essay.
Social Studies
Mavericks are learning about exploration and colonization of the US. They will discuss: The First Americans, Ancient American Cultures, American Indians, European Exploration, along with the settlement of Spanish Colonies, English Colonies, Pilgrims and Puritans and about the French and Dutch in North America.
6th Grade News
Mavericks have been exposed to identifying variables involved in the scientific process. October begins Unit Two: Earth and Space; where students build models to illustrate the structural layers of Earth; identify major tectonic plates and describe how they cause major geological events; classify rocks and describe the physical properties; and locations and patterns of the Sun and planets.
Reading
Mavericks are enriching their knowledge and Reading. They are learning even more knowledge about the skills required for the four genres of fiction, poetry, expository, and persuasive. These skills will their literacy knowledge grow. Mavericks are also encouraged to read every day!
Math
Mavericks have been learning about integers. Now they will be using all the operations to solve problems involving the integers they have been learning about. This is a new concept and sometimes struggle. You can help your child by using these skills at home. Finding opportunities for them to work with positive and negative numbers while discussing money and banking are some examples of ways to incorporate these skills in real-life.
Writing
We encourage writing to be incorporated in all subjects. Mavericks will be working on two important pieces: response to text and expository essay.
Social Studies
Mavericks are learning about the foundations of geography and North America. They will be learning about climate, culture, exploration, and the economy.
Library Life
We have begun our 40 Book Challenge: Mavericks are participating in this reading incentive program that require students to read a wide range of books on different genres. This is a district initiative that helps students with sustained reading, rigor, and support students being lifelong readers. As students are successful in completing 10 books per grading period, they receive prizes from the library.
The Book Club began September 27th and meets every two weeks on Thursdays at 7:45-8:25 in the KIVA. The club is student centered where students set the ground rules, select the books that's read, and guide the meeting discussions.
