Hello Coker Families
I hope all is well. We only have a few weeks left before the winter break and the school is busy as ever.
As we approach the break, I want to remind everyone about the calendar being a little different this year. Our first day of winter break is Thursday the 22nd. I understand there will be some families leaving earlier for the holidays, so I want to clarify our attendance policy. Students missing 5 or more days of school will receive an attendance letter from the district as well as the campus. If a student misses school for vacation purposes, it will be counted as an unexcused absence. If a student is sick, it can be excused with a note from a parent/guardian. If a student is absent and a doctor's note is turned in, the absence does not count for truancy purposes. Attendance is serious business. Not only does attendance affect the money we receive from the state, it is also used for determining our overall campus rating. Attendance is taken every day at 9:15 a.m., if your student is at school until 9:30 a.m. they will be counted present for the day.
I also would like to take this time to invite you all to our Math Parenting class on Friday, December 9, 2016 at 8:00 a.m. in the library. The way math is now taught s very different from the way many of us learned it. We felt it would be helpful to have Mrs. Roe, a district Math Specialist, come in and answer any questions parents might have about how math is currently being taught. Thank you Mrs. Negley for organizing this event. Afterward, I would like to hold a forum to hear from parents. We have some wonderful people in this community who are smart, creative and could provide us with some great ideas on how to make Coker a better school. I would like to meet with parents after the math presentation to hear your ideas. This will also be a time to suggest positive improvements. For example, this year a parent emailed me suggesting we focus on safety issues regarding traffic on Heimer. To date, we have had the city come out and discuss the school zone, signage, and provide a patrol officer in the area each morning and afternoon. It was a great suggestion from another set of eyes. This is not a sounding board for complaints. Complaints should be directed to the person most closely involved, such as the teacher for grading concerns, or an administrator or counselor for other concerns that need to be addressed right away. I am always happy to hear from parents, and I would love to use your creative talents in making Coker the best elementary school in San Antonio.
Thank you for all you do,
Drew Hall
Principal
