Newsletter

From the Principal
Tēnā koutou katoa,
It is with considerable delight that I pen my first newsletter to you as the Principal of Rosehill College. Firstly I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude for the warm welcome and manaakitanga my family and I have received.
The pōwhiri was an amazing blend of both schools demonstrating their commitment to being authentically proud of their respective schools. I would like to express my sincere thanks for the mahi put in by the staff of both Rosehill College and Tangaroa College.
My overwhelming observation is that the students of Rosehill College are fantastic, and are proud to be Rosehill College students. The staff are committed and passionate about wanting each student to achieve their full potential.
I also want to take this time to reiterate some of the key messages I expressed at my pōwhiri. I have also spoken to students at our Principal's Assemblies about being excellent and what excellence looks like. Being excellent is not difficult to achieve for example
- Be on time to school and classes
- Be respectful and kind to others
- Be proud of our school by wearing our school uniform with pride and honour
- Work hard on your learning and ask questions
Uniform Loyalty and Pride Push: Please encourage your children to wear the correct school uniform with pride. As of next Monday, school caps and school hats are only to be worn and no non-uniform jackets and/or non-uniform sweatshirts. I have also spoken to Year 13s about the dress code and ensuring they adhere to this.
Lateness Loyalty and Pride Push: Please encourage your children to arrive early to school, I am out on the gates in the morning and note the large amount of students being late to school. I will be starting to contact home if students are recidivously late. Their academic learning is important to us, so it is important we collectively work together to ensure our students get the best learning experience.
We have our SAM’s (Student Achievement Meetings) day on Monday 1st August from 8.40am-4.20pm.
This is an opportunity to understand where your child's learning is at. I encourage parents to come and ask questions.
We are here to help and to make sure our students are successful.

We have 11 new students (8 starting this week and 3 next week). The students are excited to be in New Zealand and enjoying classes.

EPRO 8 Junior Competition
Here's what two of your year 9 students have to say about the EPRO-8 Junior Competition:
We went to Mission Heights Junior High at 8:00 am on Friday July 8th. All the people that participated from Rosehill College are Bella, Bonnie, Addison, Harry, Jacob, Mythias, Arpit, Kelly and Mr Palmer. What we got out of EPRO-8 was the experience of working with wires, gadgets and learning how to use them. EPRO-8 was a really good and challenging experience for me considering I have never done anything like this before, overall it was a really good experience.
- Isla Kroon 9PNO
A few weeks prior to Friday the 8th of July, our class started preparing for the EPRO-8 competition, which is designed to teach kids about STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). 8 kids from our grade (Year 9) were chosen to participate in the competition that was held at Mission Heights Junior College.
On the day of the competition two teams, Team Tesla consisting of Bonnie Edgar, Kelly Xing, Addison Hall and Arpit Behal, and Rosehill College 2 with Jacob Cox, Isla Kroon, Bella Yee, and Harry Kim, With our reserve Mythias Figota. The teams left for the competition at 8:20am with Mr Palmer. Once we arrived we got a briefing from Mr Thiele, the organiser of the competition.
We later started, with a simple purpose. To construct something with the gear we had, which included metal rods, connectors, battery packs, torches, wires etc. We had a booklet from which we could choose challenges, and we would construct parts of the challenge earning points. Both teams were doing extremely well in the very close competition. Both teams earned over 150 points with Tesla earning 210 points. The results were very close, and resulted in a 5 way tie for first, leaving Tesla in second place and Rosehill College 2 Tied for 8th.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable day, and all 8 of us definitely enjoyed and learned a lot from the experience.

Daffodil Day symbolises hope for all New Zealanders impacted by cancer.
Every day 71 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer. For over 30 years New Zealanders have supported the work of the Cancer Society on Daffodil Day and we need your help again this year.
Whether it's driving someone to their treatment, providing advice to someone who has rung our 0800 number, or sitting with them during their treatment - the Cancer Society is there. But we can't do this without your help.
