Site Visits and Guest Speakers
Mercy-GoHealth-Pathway to Physician Dr. Carl Peters spoke and answered questions about the process of becoming a physician, including the financial commitment and why he chose to become a family practitioner. | SSM Nutrition Patricia Franscavitch and Kendra Payne presented on becoming a Registered Dietitian and their role in the patient care process. They also demonstrated a number of patient education activities to help associates visualize common conditions and procedures seen in the field of dietetics. | BJC-Nurse Practitioner-How to Give Bad News to Patients Susan Mitchell-Derenski, a women’s health nurse practitioner at Progress West, presented about her career path then led the associates in an activity where they practiced giving bad news to a patient. Associates reflected on the words used, tone of voice, and body language. |

Patricia Franscavitch and Kendra Payne presented on becoming a Registered Dietitian and their role in the patient care process. They also demonstrated a number of patient education activities to help associates visualize common conditions and procedures seen in the field of dietetics.
BJC-Nurse Practitioner-How to Give Bad News to Patients
Susan Mitchell-Derenski, a women’s health nurse practitioner at Progress West, presented about her career path then led the associates in an activity where they practiced giving bad news to a patient. Associates reflected on the words used, tone of voice, and body language.
Public Health Rikki Maus of the St. Louis County Health Department presented about careers in public health then led the associates through a mock foodborne illness outbreak and how communication between all involved is a key aspect. | Delmar Gardens and Delmar Villas John Daniels and Teri Ritter of Garden Villas of O’Fallon and Delmar Gardens, respectively, took associates on a tour of the facilities, educated about services provided, and had associates participate in a simulated aging activity. | Hospice Suzy Newman of St. Luke’s Homecare and Hospice talked about the roles nurses, therapists, and social workers play in comfort care as well as treating the “whole” patient and their family. |
Public Health

Delmar Gardens and Delmar Villas
John Daniels and Teri Ritter of Garden Villas of O’Fallon and Delmar Gardens, respectively, took associates on a tour of the facilities, educated about services provided, and had associates participate in a simulated aging activity.
Hospital Training Associates received USP 800 training through BJC under the instructing of nurse educator, Jann Christensen, and occupational health nurse, Theresa LaGarce. The training showed associates proper dawning and doffing different levels of Personal Protective Equipment in specific simulated situations. | Case Studies Associates are working in groups on different medical case studies over the integumentary and respiratory systems, as a way to get associates thinking critically, practicing presentation skills, and working with medical terms. Case studies will cover a wide variety of topics through the coming weeks. | Mentor and Project Planning Associates are hard at work finding projects, meeting with potential mentors, and planning their CAPStone projects. |

Associates are working in groups on different medical case studies over the integumentary and respiratory systems, as a way to get associates thinking critically, practicing presentation skills, and working with medical terms. Case studies will cover a wide variety of topics through the coming weeks.
St. Charles Ambulance District Service Center Tour
Deputy Chief Jeremey Hollrah gave associates a tour of the SCCAD operations base. Associates got a look behind the curtain as to how SCCAD keeps its fleet of vehicles operational as well as how SCCAD has prepared for disasters and major incidents.


Tour of St. Charles Community College -Center for Healthy Living
Lindy McGuire led the associates on a tour of the facility and discussed the programs available right here in St. Charles County. SCCC-Center for Healthy Living is also a great classroom space for the Healthcare Program.

Cross-Strand Event- Delmar Gardens and McClay Senior Care
Associates from all three strands came together to provide a holiday party for residents. The AM associates entertained the residents at the Garden Villas of O’Fallon. The PM associates entertained the residents at McClay Senior Care. Associates interacted with the residents, sang carols, made cards and ornaments, wrapped presents, and did crafts. Associates were able to spend time and network with associates from the other strands.




Observational Rotations
Week 4, 5 and 6 of rotations occurred in December and January for the healthcare associates. The participation by the below businesses is what makes the CAPS experience authentic. We would also like to welcome St. Peter's Ambulatory Surgery Center and Walgreen's-Winghaven to our rotation sites.
