Sustainability at Knox

Campus Race to Zero Waste begins this week!
What is Campus Race to Zero Waste (CR2ZW)?
Campus Race to Zero Waste (CR2ZW ) is an 8 week Campaign (Jan 28- March 23) sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation that colleges and universities across the nation participate in with the collective goal to: reduce our waste, recycle more, repurpose materials, compost food scraps, divert waste from the landfill and reduce our carbon footprint.
Knox College is participating again this year and has set a goal to reduce our waste and divert over 30-35% percent of our waste/ materials from the landfill (to do better than we did last year, which was an average diversion rate of 25-28% of our materials from the landfill). In order to calculate our waste on campus, the Office of Sustainability will be collecting data each week for the materials that are destined to the landfill, conventional recycling, and organic recycling. We will also observe contamination in the material streams.
Take the challenge to reduce your waste, increase your diversion rate, and decrease contamination in the waste streams. Start today by observing your daily patterns around waste, consumption, and sourcing. Be sure you know what can and cannot be recycled here at Knox. Check out the these resources https://www.knox.edu/Documents/Sustainability/WhatcanIRecycleatKnox.pdf.
Our individual choices and behaviors matter and we can make a difference in meaningful ways, especially when we support each other and work together!
Join us in our efforts as a college to take on the challenge and meet our goals in the Campus Race to ZERO Waste 2024 Campaign.
