A note from the teacher...
I hope everyone had a wonderful Spring Break whether you stayed in town or were able to travel a bit. I am excited to see the kiddos tomorrow and here all about the things they did over break. Just a reminder this Wednesday is an Early Out. Also, we will have an upcoming field trip to the Civic Center on April 19th. More information will be coming soon, but I did want to give you a heads up. We will be seeing "What Do You Do With an idea?" This field trip is for students and teachers only, so no parent volunteers are needed. It will be in the morning and we will be back to school for lunch that day (we will most likely switch to a later lunch time with another grade level). Thanks and I am looking to a wonderful week back full of fun and learning!
Thank you for sharing your children with me each day!

Shuler Striders
What is Shuler Striders? Shuler Striders is our voluntary walk/run program that we provide during lunch recess Monday through Thursday. Each student is given a lanyard with a tag on it and they walk from one side of the school (and parent volunteer), around the back to of the building to the other side of the school (and the second parent volunteer) and back. At each parent stop, they get a mark (half an X). For each 7 Xs they earn a different charm. After 75 Xs they have completed a marathon.
Do kids really do this? They do! And they really like it! Last year we had 95 students complete at least one marathon, 37 complete 2 marathons, and handed out awards for a total of 147 marathons completed. We had 1 fifth grader complete 5 marathons and another complete 6 marathons! Many students participate off and on throughout the year and earn charms even if they don’t complete a marathon.
Do you do this all year, even in the winter? We have a fall session that will start around Sept 25th if the playground and sidewalk are ready and will end for the winter in the second week of November. We start again after spring break and end the week before school gets out. We do not hold striders if the weather does not cooperate (rain or cold).
How can I help? We need 2 volunteers (parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. are welcome) for each day, one for each side. You can even bring a chair! One side will have a cart, mark cards and hand out charms, the other side simply gets to mark cards. Shifts last the entire lunch period checking in at 11:15 am for the 11:20 lunch recess and ending at 2pm after the last lunch recess is complete. That is a large chunk of time, so you are welcome to split it with someone if you coordinate, just let Mandy (the striders coordinator) know.
