WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - February 12, 2021
Principal's Corner
Dear FSA Families,
Did you know that today marks the beginning of a Lunar New Year? In reading about this and educating myself about this New Year Tradition and Lunar Calendar, I learned the Lunar New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are typically spent with family in celebration along with other fun and beautiful traditions to ring in the new year.
Encyclopedia Britannica reads that the, "Lunar New Year, Chinese Chunjie, Vietnamese Tet, Korean Solnal, Tibetan Losar, also called Spring Festival, festival [is] typically celebrated in China, Korea, and other Asian countries [and] begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar and ends on the first full moon of the lunar calendar, 15 days later. The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon, so the dates of the holiday vary slightly from year to year, beginning some time between January 21 and February 20 according to Western calendars. "
I hope that all of our families that celebrate the Lunar New Year have a beautiful day with your families and enjoy this special time! Happy New Year!
Next I want to give a HUGE congratulations to our 4th & 5th grade FLL Team and coaches! We got the news late this afternoon that the team passed the Regional competition and will now continue to the Georgia State Championship! Way to go to these fantastic students and coaches, Mrs. Yasemin Duman and Coach Tarik Uduk!

FSA Junior Ashi Jain Creates Brand New Coloring Book for our elementary students!
I have designed a coloring book on the theme of kindness. This book highlights that even the smallest act of kindness can make a great impact. The book features a poem with simple, easy-to-read words jumping from the page, as well as unique colorable illustrations meant for children to exercise their creativity on and color. It includes cute and funny animal characters and designs that will take kids on an adventure to learn the value of kindness. This coloring book will also provide a way to release anxiety and help ease the stress of online-school through a fun and creative activity. All pages are easily printable. I would like to share this book with my FSA Community's elementary students.
Random Acts of Kindness Week is February 14 - 20, a great opportunity for children to practice kindness in their community. The coloring book would be a great add-on to our school's Random Acts of Kindness Week celebrations!

Virtual D.E.A.R. Day at FSA
We are excited to celebrate Read Across America Week in elementary at FSA. To finish out the week, we will have our annual D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) day on Friday, March 5th. We would love to make this day special for our students by having some guest readers join in on the fun! High School Students are also encouraged to participate if they are able! We also think our students would LOVE to see their familiar FSA faces for a read aloud and/or activity if you are interested. These read alouds would be done virtually. If you are interested and available, please sign up below!
Thank you for helping make this a memorable day for our students!
Read Across America Week at FSA (March 1 - 5)
Our elementary students will spend the first week of March celebrating Read Across America Week! We will be exploring books with a daily theme. Each day students will participate in fun and educational activities that help foster a LOVE for reading as well as have special virtual visits each day from some great children's book authors!
Students are also welcome and encouraged to participate in the theme days by dressing up. We can't wait to explore the world of books with our FSA students. On Friday, we will finish out the week with our annual D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) Day. We are challenging our students to read for at least 60 minutes on this day and will spend the day focused on reading for enjoyment. Did you know.... if ALL of our elementary students read for 60 minutes, we will have read a total of more than 20,000 minutes?!
Our themes for the week include:
- Monday - "Bringing Reading to Life!"
Dress as your favorite storybook character to kick off our Read Across America week!
- Tuesday - “Readers are Great Leaders”
Dress for a job you would like one day, or for a problem you would like to solve one day
- Wednesday - “Travel with a Great Book”
Time to explore different people & places… wear something to represent your family’s culture, a culture you have read about, or a place you have visited through a book! - Thursday - “Silly Scholars Ready to Rhyme”
Let’s dedicate the day to exploring the genre of poetry. Come dressed in your silliest attire OR in items that rhyme. - Friday - “Readers Dream BIG!”
Finishing out the week with D.E.A.R. Day… come cozy in your PJs and bring your favorite book to Drop Everything And Read!
