Student Athlete/Registration
Do you want to play sports in college? Students who are planning to play Division I or Division II athletics should register with the NCAA their junior year of high school.
Students should also consider registering with the NAIA if planning to play in that division. Scholarships are available to some players. Some popular schools in the area who are NAIA are: IU Southeast, Grace College, Goshen College, Taylor University, Brescia University, Berea College, and Georgetown College. For a more complete list and to register please visit: http://www.naia.org/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205322922
College Applications
Applications/Early Action Dates:
Many schools have the November 1st date as their Early Action deadline. However, there are other Early Action deadlines and of course colleges have the regular admissions/rolling admissions. Some schools have a deadline of November 15th (example: Goshen and St. Mary's College) or December 1st. DePauw and University of Evansville are examples of colleges with a December 1st EA deadline. Applying with this application type is recommended if a student has a strong application and is interested in a quick decision and with meeting merit aid deadlines. Keeping these deadlines in mind is generally recommended when applying even with a Regular Decision type, or Rolling Admission application, due to colleges listing these early deadlines for eligibility with scholarship offers from the institution.
Ordering Official Test Scores
- Other colleges will accept the test scores off of the transcript (which will save you $$$). Example: University of Louisville
- And, other colleges are test optional and may not require the scores at all. Examples: Hanover, Ball State, St. Mary's (Notre Dame)
Ordering High School Transcripts
Congratulations! You have submitted your college application but don't forget to send your transcript! The application is not complete until the transcript has been sent. Log in to Parchment and "Order" your transcript to be sent to your chosen institutions. http://www.parchment.com/
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
The 2019–20 FAFSA form is here! Some states and schools have limited funds, so submit your application today. Also, check out the new myStudentAid app for iOS and Android.
On MONDAY, November 12, 2018 PHS is hosting a workshop to complete the application. More information below about the FAFSA...
Every senior should complete the FAFSA and each following year of undergrad/graduate school. Many PHS seniors have already completed the FAFSA. For students and families with questions here are some resources, and of course, please contact Mrs. Losey with questions.
Updates: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa
The Director of Financial Aid, Pam Meek, presented at the Financial Aid Night in September. She is still available as a resource and can be reached at pmeek@ivytech.edu. Ms. Meek will return to help families complete the FAFSA at the Workshop on 11/12/18 at PHS.
- Use 2017 tax records.
- It's recommended to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool to submit tax records.
- The FAFSA is the required application for all state financial aid programs and grants. In Indiana, students must complete the FAFSA by March 10th to be eligible for state aid.
- What is Financial Aid? Gift Aid=grants, scholarships, Self-Help Aid=loans, employment. Recommended to start searching and applying for scholarships junior year. FAFSA is the application for grants (money that does not have to be paid back).
- Expected Family Contribution (EFC): will be the same from school to school, calculated by a federal formula using information provided on FAFSA, amount the government determines a family can reasonably be expected to contribute, is NOT the amount your family will have to pay for college and is NOT the amount of federal aid a family will receive, and IS based on both student and parent contribution and household demographics of size, income, and number of students attending college.
- Families should log back in to their account to check the status. Processing can take 5-7 days and edits will be allowable after application is processed.
- Students should list all schools they are applying to on the FAFSA so the school(s) will receive the application in order to potentially make financial aid offers to the student.
