Poplar Grove Post
January 2017
NOTE FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL:
Hello Poplar Grove Families,
What an awesome year so far! It’s hard to believe that we are finished with the first semester and that 2016 has come to an end. I would like to thank each and every student, parent, family member, teacher and aid that has worked to make the first half of this school year so successful. I sincerely hope you all had a terrific break.
We are pleased to announce that thanks to all the hard work and money raised for Fall Fest we have purchased 60 Chromebooks for our school. We are quickly working to become 1:1 with technology, and we appreciate your support. Fall Fest successfully raised over $10,000, and we hope to make it a lasting PGS tradition in the future.
Thanks for all you do to make this a wonderful place to teach and learn.

CLINIC NEWS FROM NURSE LIZ:
Winter is here and along with colder weather comes the seasonal increase in colds, flu and other illnesses. Parents, here are a couple important reminders and things to discuss with your child.
· Be proactive! Have a plan in place in the event that your child becomes sick or injured at school. Discuss with your child who they should call first. Teach your child how to use the phone and how to leave a message when they call you. It’s surprising the number of students who don’t know their parent's phone number, how to dial or speak into a phone or leave a message. Remind your child if they don’t feel well, they should let their teacher know and ask to come visit the nurse in the clinic. Your child SHOULD NOT text you from class or the bathroom, asking you to come and pick them up from school!
· Make sure that both the front office and the clinic have current phone numbers. If your home, cell or work numbers have changed since you registered your child for the school year, please let us know. BE PROMPT, if you are called to come pick up your child due to illness or injury, please do so within an hour. Familiarize and follow the FSSD Illness Policy.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER:
The most rapidly increasing problem in teens today is obesity. To combat this problem it is vital that you reduce the carbohydrates and sugars in your family’s regular diet. Make sure your child keeps physically active. Regular exercise is vital to healthy growth and development – and to emotional health. Physically active teens are less susceptible to depression. Make a daily exercise schedule part of your teens health habits. Join your teen in exercise whenever possible – it can build family bonds and help you stay in shape. Be a good role model for your children, eat healthy food and be active.
