Cooper: Michigan Department of Education Data Dashboard
Dear Parents/Guardians,
The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) has released a new data dashboard that gives parents and community members information about how their local schools are performing in relation to state averages and to averages of demographically similar schools. The dashboard allows deeper dives into the performance of various groups of students, such as gender, race, subject, and services to students.
This dashboard will be released in several phases; this is Phase One. Important information for parents to know about the information presented in this phase is that each data set has three bars:
a green bar for school's average state scores.
a red/pink bar for comparison to a peer group of schools, that the Michigan Department of Education has determined, as having similar demographics.
an orange bar for overall state averages, this includes all tested grade levels and assessments (M-STEP, Mi-Access and SAT) in that average.
The red/pink bar peer group was determined by four characteristics: number of students enrolled in the schools, student - teacher ratio, percentage of students receiving free/reduced lunch, and schools location setting (urban, suburban, rural). Once the group of up to 30 schools is determined by the MDE, an average of all schools is calculated for the peer group. Specific schools are not provided, just the average scores. Due to this criteria, the peer average could vary from school to school.
Livonia Public Schools School District does not have an overall average on the dashboard. All dashboards are at the school building level, but the comparison is to the total state average and the peer group average. The dashboard indicators or measures, now available, include:
State assessment performance
State assessment progress
Graduation rate
Advanced coursework (e.g. Advanced Placement, early middle college, International Baccalaureate (IB), dual enrollment, career/technical education postsecondary enrollment)
On-track attendance
English Learner progress
Assessment participation
The dashboard is available directly at www.MISchoolData.org/ParentDashboard You may use a search box or interactive Michigan map, designed especially for the dashboard, to find our school and compare it with state averages. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/mde-ParentDashboard.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Ms. Owens & Mrs. Collyer
