what is cystic fibrosis?

and inherited disease that affects the lungs, digestive system, sweat glands, and male fertility

caused by?

Cystic Fibrosis is caused by the defect in an individual's genes. one defected gene effects the entire individual. these defects are passed on through inheritance.

Is there a prevention method?

There is no way to prevent a potential child from being born with Cystic Fibrosis after conception. However, when planning to have a family, genetic testing is available, but can keep you from having children or show you the risks of your child obtaining CF.

symptoms develop gradually. common symptoms include: swelling of the sinuses, likely infection of the lungs, frequent coughing, poor digestion, and increased salt loss from sweat glands causing the patient to eat more salty foods. Also, males with CF are highly likely to be sterile, and in both boys and girls, puberty is delayed.

Depending on the severity of these symptoms, they may be fatal

How can the condition be detected?

Sweat test- easiest and most accurate, in this test a certain drug is given to induce sweat to be tested

Genetic testing- genes from small tissue and blood samples are examined for mutations

newborn screening- gives many false positives, but can predict based off blood pressure to indicate whether or not the baby has CF

Are there any treatments?

There is no definite cure for Cystic Fibrosis, however there are treatments to increase life span of the patient and the quality of that patients expected life time. some treatments even allow children to participate in all everyday activities and sports, if diagnosed at an early stage
