Principal's Report
School Attendance
At Oakview, test scores continue to sustain the highest levels within South Carolina elementary schools. In the most recent data available on the 667 elementary schools across the state, Oakview ranked 11th in English Language Arts and 15th in Mathematics, based on SC Ready test scores! These are impressive results given the size and diversity of our school.
At the same time, however, attendance data for Oakview has shown a downward trend over recent years. In the last four years, Oakview’s average daily attendance looks like this.
Oakview Average Daily Attendance
- 2015: 97.23%
- 2016: 97.15%
- 2017: 96.96%
- 2018: 96.72%
- Trend: -0.51%
When reviewing attendance data for Oakview, student illness and family trips are the most common reasons for student absences. Like all S.C. schools, we want to make sure students who are sick stay home. Parents are asked to review the Parent/Student Handbook or the Healthroom information posted on our web site to know the rules regarding absences due to illness. Student illnesses cannot be avoided and in the interest of everyone’s health at the school, sick children should be kept at home in accordance with school and district policy.
Family trips, however, should be avoided during the school year. To assist parents, Oakview’s web site calendar posts all school holidays and teacher workdays when students are not attending. Parents are asked to schedule trips around the 180 day school year so students have maximum access to daily instruction.
September is Attendance Awareness Month and Greenville County Schools is promoting the annual “Attendance Blitz.” The elementary school with the highest attendance rate through January 14, 2020 will win a plaque and recognition. Please help us “bring home the gold” this year by focusing on regular daily attendance. Just like our high test scores, we hope to post an increase in average daily attendance for 2019. Thank you in advance for your part in supporting that goal!
