Greetings and Happy New Year!!
Thank you all for such a warm and wonderful welcome to Olivet Elementary. I am loving my days here at at school - such a fabulous staff and wonderful students and families! We had a great start to the school year with the Beautification Day, Harvest Fair, and Winter Wonderland! We hired a new PA, and continue to offer PE, music, art, STEAM class, tutoring, ice skating, and a host of other amazing field trips!
Upcoming events include the "Send Students to Camp," Luau on Feb. 22nd, an annual fundraiser that ensures all 6th graders go to camp! This event will be a fabulously fun event for adults only! This event is followed by Spring Break, March 18th-22nd, and when we return, the Month of April is CAASPP Testing for 3rd-6th graders.
A few reminders:
Lunch - please send healthy snacks and lunches with your child (powdered donuts and Gatorade do not count as healthy). Keep the sugar content low and complex carbohydrates (raw fruits and vegetables) high! Need some inspiration? Check out these lunch ideas!

2nd and 3rd grade teachers collaborating to align the math curriculum across the grade levels.
Superintendent Carmen Diaz-French, sharing the LCAP process with staff.
Healthy Habits:
Flu and cold season is upon us! While we encourage healthy habits at school, please talk to your kiddos about how to protect themselves from getting sick:
Wash hands before eating.
Cough and sneeze into your elbow (not hands).
Dress for warmth.
Drink lots of water.
Eat a well balanced diet with a variety of foods.
Get plenty of rest (turn off the video games at least one hour before bedtime).
Student DROP-OFF and PICK-UP:
Safety is our number one concern. A few simple guidelines will continue to move our drop-off/pick-up lines smoothly and safely:
Please STAY IN YOUR CAR. If you would like to open the door, and/or kiss and hug your child, please park in a parking spot to do so.
Please be polite to our parking attendants - they have student safety as their primary concern and work diligently to keep the lines moving. Give them a smile and wave to show your appreciation for keeping your kiddo safe.
PLEASE PULL FORWARD - this will allow cars to keep moving off of Willowside. Stack-ups occur quickly when a car stops to drop off too soon.
“Quick like a fox!” - please have your child ready to get out of the car quickly and safely. Family chats and reminders should be done prior to getting in line.
Handicap spots are truly for our students and families that have the blue handicap placards - please do not park in the handicap spots unless you have one of these visible. Our Olivet Family members that have these placards, thank you for your kindness.
DO NOT park in the fire lane at any time. Doing so is against the law and could result in a ticket for you. The fire lanes are the lanes closest and furthest away from the school. The middle lane may also NOT be used for parking.
KINDERGARTEN PARENTS: Please see # 1 above. This is especially important on Wednesdays when the school gets out early. ALSO, once you have picked up your kiddo, please leave the school immediately as school is still in session. Please do not stay on the play yard or linger with your child.
In each newsletter, we will celebrate and highlight different grade levels. This month, we'd like to introduce you to our awesome 2nd and 3rd Grade Classes, with teachers Carrie Forrest, Pamell Gallagher, Daniela Doughty and Karie Seliga!
2nd Grade Updates!
Olivet 2nd Graders are busy, busy, busy! Every day students are becoming stronger readers, writers, and mathematicians.
In math, we just finished up a unit on measuring using many different units: unifix cubes, sticks, inchworm rulers, teacher feet, giant feet, yard strings, and measuring tapes.
Music class finds second graders singing, jazz square dancing, and learning about music all over the world. Thank you, Ms. Ross! The kids were proud to perform during our First Annual Winter Wonderland concert.
Field Trip!!
We are fortunate this year to have been selected to participate in Pepperwood Preserve’s SCENIQ program. The program empowers elementary school students to become scientists and practice discovery skills, learn to support their ideas with evidence, and gain knowledge of our local environment through TWO field trips to the Preserve and Science Center, and one classroom visit.
2nd Graders also visited Piner High School’s Planetarium for a look at the stars. In March we will enjoy The Magic Tree - A Hip Hop Musical.
What’s that Buzzzzz? In our STEAM Lab Class, 2nd grade engineers created their own pollinators to solve the problem of not enough bees to pollinate vanilla bean flowers.
And to further connect our study of plants and bees, an organization called Planet Bee https://www.planetbee.org/ will be coming to Olivet on four different occasions in April to teach 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade students all about Honeybees, Native California Bees, Bee-ometry, and Bee Engineering. Thank you, Olivet Families, for your field trip fundraising!
Our science study does not stop there. In the coming weeks, students will learn all about the forms of water and land on earth. To share what they’ve learned, students will be designing and creating their own landform Islands.
Mrs. Gallagher's 2nd Grade
Mrs. Gallagher’s class motto this year is: When We Work Together, We Can Climb Mountains. Together we have embarked on all sorts of learning adventures. During Social Studies, we created a “Where Are We in the Universe” map booklets with art and maps zooming in from the Milky Way Galaxy all the way to Room 9 at our school. We also participated in a parent-led Junior Achievement program that taught us about goods and services, money, voting, government and taxes.
We especially love Science. We began with a unit called “What is Science” that involved a Science Exploration Day, a close observation of a flower, learning about different branches of science, and a snow dough experiment. We also learned about our skeletons just in time for Halloween. We enjoy watching Mystery Doug videos and trying out their activities (such as spiders and x-rays), too! We have made models of plants inspired by our trip to Pepperwood. And, during Writers Workshop, we are writing Science Lab Reports that include Question, Hypothesis, Procedure, Results and Conclusions.
Mrs. Forrest’s 2nd Grade Class
Wow! It’s hard to believe that we are saying good-bye to January! Room 15 Super Heros have come a long way since the start of school. As a class, we have read, studied, learned and written about many interesting things. Some of our favorite animals were salamanders, spiders, bats, turkeys, brown bears, emus, caribou and polar bears! Currently we are researching penguins. The second graders are captivated by these unique and interesting birds.
This class also loves to learn about people who have made a difference to our country. We read and studied Martin Luther King and learned about Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges as well. We will continue our studies in that area. Second graders love maps! We do daily geography activities and the kids are fascinated by it. Some highlights so far include: Pepperwood Preserve, STEAM class, the Winter Wonderland Concert, and PE with Mr. Bacher.
3rd Grade Updates!
It’s hard to believe we just completed the 100th day of school! Our kids have loved growing their brain while exploring the world of multiplication, division, fractions and more. Teachers, students, and parents are all learning new and different strategies to solve real-world math problems. (Thank you for being flexible, while we are learning more strategies than just the “old school way”)
In the beginning of the year, we focused on Native American tribes. Both classes got to experience their first group presentation using google slides on their brand new Chromebooks. This unit also featured a classroom visit and outdoor field trip to the Laguna de Santa Rosa.
Another unit of study has been habitats and adaptations. Both 3rd-grade classes attended the Spring Lake field trip and experienced adaptations through a puppet performance and observing taxidermied animals. One of their favorite parts of the field trip was our nature walk and touching the starfish in the tide pool. Spring Lake docents also visited our classrooms two times to reinforce plant and animal adaptations. We created our own made-up animals using recycled materials and planted different types of plants in our school gardens. This was a wonderful introduction to our current unit of study: FOSSILS!
We want to give a huge shout out to our third grade classes that created our incredible backdrop for our Winter Wonderland Performance. While Ms. Seliga worked with one class on the backdrop, Mrs. Doughty worked with one class on the songs. The teachers loved being able to work with both classes on this project!
We look forward to the next 80 days of incredible learning in rooms 8 and 13!

I am in my third year of teaching music at the Piner Olivet schools! When I was a kid, I began learning about music through piano lessons and singing in church. I was inspired by my favorite teachers to become a teacher myself! After studying music in college and graduate school, I taught students in kindergarten through college level. I find inspiration in my students' love of and curiosity about music! I hope they become lifelong music learners and continue to explore the musical world around them!
Across the Yard:
A few reminders for everyone, please pick up your trash and any other YOU SEE on the ground. This is OUR SCHOOL and it reflects on us to how well we keep our campus.
When we transition from the 1st seating of eating to the 2nd seating, please do not run. You have plenty of time to play and get the wiggles out. Crashing into a fellow student can ruin their whole day.
Our job is to keep the students safe and the student's job is to practice safety.
Thanks Olivet Ospreys
Introducing P.A. Georgianne Black
I grew up in the Bay Area enjoying my family close by. A move to Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park preceded living in Davis where my daughter grew up. She now lives in Mexico as a musician and artist.
Hiking in the backcountry of the high sierras has been an important part of my life since my early teens. Traveling, music, the arts, and reading are favorite past times as well.
As a swim instructor, I saw the effects of positive learning, and have been enjoying this aspect at Olivet for four years. I look forward to sharing future years with the children at Olivet and seeing them succeed in the future!
