## This Week in Writing

Unit 4: Informational Writing

This week in Writing, the students will continue to learn about Informational Writing. This is an exciting unit as the subject area for their writing and research is Chicago. Each student will choose a topic relating to Chicago, then research that topic and write about it. Two important elements of this unit, which we will be focusing on for the next few weeks are how to do research and the importance of text features. For research, the students will learn how to use a variety of media resources, find information on their topic, take notes and how to organize their notes. When learning about text features, the students will understand the importance of using text features and how to include them in an informational essay.

## This Week in Reading

Unit 4: Social Studies

We've had a really busy week in reading class this week. We have just begun our new reading unit. Throughout this unit, we will explore how communities adapt to their environment. We will be reading a variety of texts, including nonfiction, fiction, and poetry. In class, we have read a book about homes/dwellings in all parts of the world. We have also read a book and learned all about what the traditional daily life was like for Native Americans living in a longhouse village. Through these beautifully illustrated texts, the students are learning to use a note-taking organizer and also learning the meaning of important content-specific vocabulary to deepen their understanding.
We just finished our first week of third quarter. I have conferenced with all students to discuss their STAR scores, new AR colors/levels, and new reading goals. Hopefully, they have shared this information with you. Please continue to be sure that your child is reading every day at home for 35 minutes. You may check their AR progress through Renaissance Place through the Home Connection. You will need your child's username and password. Thank you so much for all of your support!
