Basic info.

Marlee Matlin was born August 24th, 1965.

She is not deceased, and she was born in Morton Grove, Illinois.

Marlee lost her hearing somewhere around 18 months old-- and it was seen as something that would "hold her back".

She attended John Hershey High School, and Harper College.

Right now she lives in Los Angeles with her husband and children.

Her deafness did not stop her from interacting in things like school plays, and she was actually an aspiring actor even from a young age.

She has starred in several well-know productions like 'Switched at Birth' and 'Children of a Lesser God'.

She received an Academy Award for "Best Actress in a Leading Role" for 'Children of a Lesser God' at 21 years old- the youngest for a deaf person so far!

How'd she become deaf?

Due to the Roseola virus and possibly a genetically malformed cochlea, she became deaf in her right ear and lost 80% of hearing in her left ear.

How'd she impact the deaf community?

She acted and showed that deafness could not stop her from pursuing her passion.

She also wrote a book about her deafness and her drug abuse in the past, just for general to the deaf community or the hearing as well.

Marlee has won several awards for her talents and acting throughout the years.

She continues to be a part of several charitable organizations.

Her family is Jewish.

She has four children, Isabelle, Brandon, Tyler, and Sara.

She has a good sense of humor when it comes to her own deafness.
