In ELA this week students will be using their myPal book (reading) book. Students will engage in complex vocabulary. Students will also be reading through various texts to identify the central idea and supporting details. During writing students will learn and understand what an expository or informational text is and the features by learning how an expository text is organized.

Math
Hi Everyone,
Thank you for a great first week, and I am so excited to get the ball rolling on 5th grade math. This week we begin our introduction to decimals and place value. In our Canvas course, there are a couple things that will be uploaded daily and done during our zoom instruction as well as pushed out as assignments for the afternoon. The only thing due daily will be the exit ticket and the problem set. Exit tickets will be completed during the Zoom class and problems sets will be used as their independent work. There is a section in our daily canvas assignments for Concept Development if you are not in our live Zooms or need an extra dose of the daily lesson. For the problem sets, if you decide to complete the problem sets in the math binders on paper, you do not need to do the online version as well. I will be checking paper versions in our daily zoom! As always, please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. We are truly in this together and thank you for your support as we navigate this year!

Science
This week in science we are going to begin learning about the rotation of the Earth in relation to the sun. Students will be able to explain how the rotation causes night and day. We will also explore how the sun creates shadows and look at why our shadow looks different at different times of the day. Each afternoon students will have an assignment to complete related to my lesson in their Virtual Notebook and submit it to me. Students should also be working on their Moon Journal. They are expected to observe the moon each night and then fill in the picture of the moon in their Virtual Science Notebook which they can access in their Google Drive. If students need help I will be available this week in my Zoom classroom during asynchronous learning time (12:45 - 2:45) to support students as needed.
