The 2015-2016 District Educational Improvement Council has two open positions: one (1) parent representative position and one (1) business representative position.

The committee serves exclusively in an advisory role. Parent, community, and business representatives are volunteer appointments. All representatives serve staggered two-year terms. Members are not limited as to the number of consecutive terms they may serve on DEIC.
The DEIC holds 4-6 meetings each spring, typically on Wednesday or Thursday evenings.

Bleacher Report... moving onto basketball!
7th Grade Girls Basketball - Coach Hill
7B - Lost to Jarrell 7B 15-4
After a week of practice the girls played very hard in their first game of the year. Madysen Sheppard and Dakota Hutchins scored their 1st buckets of the year in the defeat. The girls scrapped all game long, just couldn’t get their shots to drop. It was the 1st basketball game ever for most members of the team and they didn’t shy away from the challenge! They really competed ferociously from beginning to end! I can’t wait for their next game!

7A – Lost to Jarrell 7A 21-17
The 7A girls almost overcame a slow start to lose in the final seconds on their season opener vs. Jarrell 7A. Jade Press led all scorers with 6 points. Esther Long contributed 5 herself, with Aryanna Wallace, Josey Kannmacher & Hailee Horn each tallying a bucket as well. The girls were down 9 at the half and closed the lead to 4 with 1 minute to play. However, they were unable to break the seal on the basket to cut the deficit any further. The girls put forth an outstanding effort to begin their season against a Jarrell team that had already played 4 games. I’m anxious awaiting to see what the remainder of the season has in store for these girls!

8th Grade Girls Basketball - Coach Rogers
The 8th grade girls basketball team traveled to Jarrell to start off our 2016 season. The 8th grade B team had a slow start in the first half, scoring only 2 points to Jarrell's 7 points. The lady Vikings came back strong in the second half, tieing the game at 9points for each team. A shooting foul at the last buzzer gave Lago the opportunity to win the game, but neither of the two free throws could find their way home. The game ended in a tie. The offensive player of the game was Destiny Deveze with 4 points scored, and the defensive player of the game was Itza Cantera.
The 8th grade A also started their first game of the season at a slower than expected pace. The first half ended with a score of 5-21, in favor of the Jarrell Cougars. Changes were made at halftime, and the Vikings began to show a defensive presence, allowing only 10 more points in the second half. The defense also accounted for 12 points for the Vikings as well. The final score of the game was 24-31, Jarrell, but numerous improvements were made by all of our players, which will prove very beneficial in the games to come. The offensive and defensive player of the game was Mallory Webb with 17 points scored.
We are proud of all of our teams and would like to thank all of those who made the trip to Jarrell to support us in the stands. Our next game will against Forence, in Florence, on Monday, November 23, 2016. There will only be 3 games that night, with no 7th grade B game. Games start at 5pm. We hope to see you there. GO VIKINGS!
Boys Basketball -- Coach Rague & Coach Tomlin
The 7th grade A and B teams had their first game of the season Monday evening. With
a great amount of enthusiasm the 7th grade B team came up just short of winning a very
exciting game. With seconds remaining on the clock, the Vikings had a winning shot precariously rolling around the rim begging to go in. But as fate would have it, the ball spun off the rim and fell to the floor. The Vikings ended up losing 10 to 11. Cash Jennings set the tone defensively with extreme effort all over the floor while also pitching in 4 points. Hunter Phillips started the scoring off for the Vikings by nailing two consecutive shots in the first half. And Jagger Nowak rounded out the scoring by contributing one basket. In all, 12 Vikings made positive contributions towards the game. The coaches were especially impressed with the efforts of Dylan McCrory, Anson Eleutarius, and Ruben Johnson. The team will be back at it again next Monday night and hope to pull out a win.
The 7th grade A team also saw their first action of the season. With a key player out due to an injury, the A team was faced with the task of containing a very quick and speedy player from Jarrell, who caught everyone’s attention. Kaleb Alderete and David Rague were tasked with containing the speed demon from Jarrell. After studying his moves and taking the keen coaching advice from the Lago staff, they were able to force several turnovers or bad shots. As a result, Josh Alexander was able to gobble up many errant passes and snatch several rebounds.
Rory Maxwell was able to get the Vikings on the board early in the game with his snake oil salesman like moves in the post. He scored all 4 of his points before halftime. Kaleb was able to keep the scoring going throughout the game while contributing a game high 10 points. While Kaleb and Trace Sweet were on the bench due to some overzealous defense, Noah Yetley and Alex Holt were able to enter the game and keep the ship steady with there all around effort and skill. David, Trace, and Josh all hit some timely shots to keep Jarrell at bay and even extend the lead through the second half. Overall, the night was a huge success with lots of enthusiastic and entertaining basketball taking place inside Viking Gym. We hope you will come out and support our team next Monday here at home.
The 8th Grade B Team had a great start to their season with a home opening win. In this win, everyone played a massive part. Jack Stewart and Jack Hood played great defense all night. Everest Colvin did a great job of blocking out and allowing us to get the needed rebounds in the game. Josh Wehner had some clutch shooting and Zack Johnson did a great job of passing the ball around for open shots. Ethan Harris played tough down low
and Nathan Cannon lead the team with 9 points and a last second 3-point shot. Great win over all B team!
8th grade A team had their first win of the season as well. The team was lead by Sam Hurley and his 13-point in the game. Preston Coffey was hustling all night and had 3 fast
break layups. Josh Hernandez and Ben Carlton play aggressive defense and caused helpful turnovers. Tristan and Andrew Smith ran all night and created great passing lines for others to help put Jarrell away. Dillon McKee had 8 points and played tough in the post area. Hunter Sims and Nathan Wiechman pressed the half court and created a costly turn over to put points on the board. Great win 8th grade!
Allergies, Colds & Flu Season Reminders
Prevention:
- Check with your doctor about the flu shot (or nasal spray form)
- Germs live in noses and mouths. Avoid touching them without a tissue
- Cough and sneeze into your elbow, not your hand.
- Don’t share any drinks or food
- Don’t eat lots of sweets (sodas, desserts, candy.) They put your immune system to sleep!
- Wash your hands often… good washing takes about 15 seconds (hum the birthday song)
- Eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies to build a germ fighting immune system.
- Get plenty of rest - our bodies heal themselves when we sleep
Treatment:
- There is medicine for the flu if you see your doctor within 48 hours of the start of symptom (high fever, headache, dry cough, muscle aches, fatigue.)
- Treat the aches and fever with Tylenol/Acetaminophen
- Never use Aspirin for children under 18 (because of the risk of Reyes Syndrome)
- Drink plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration and speed recovery
- Prevent spreading : Stay home from work or school until your temperature is below 100 degrees for 24 hours (without using medicine to lower it! )
Let’s all have the healthiest season ever!
