Math News from Mr. Nykl
Fortunately, the math students have been able to work steadily this year with few interruptions due to covid. When students have had to transition to online the change has been smoothly accomplished since TEAMS allows a classroom-like atmosphere. Also, the majority of student work is available online and used in this manner when having face to face instruction, so the change does not cause much academic disruption, sadly no social interaction. All textbooks are available online and students can complete their assignments online as well.
Students greatly enjoy having face-to-face instruction and my hope is this will continue throughout the year.
As we approach the mid-year all courses are on pace as per the QSI curriculum guides. Students in Geometry have just completed unit five which includes everyone’s favorite topic – triangles! (Mom and dad, do you remember the centroid, incenter, circumcenter and orthocenter points? If not ask your child.) AP Calculus and AP Statistics are on schedule to have all expected topics covered by April 1st. This will allow students to review and independently study and do sample problems and tests so they will do well on the AP exam. The exam dates are May 9th for Calculus, May 10th for Statistics and May 10th for Physics.
We have been hosting Math Puzzle Contests for the elementary students. Each puzzle set has six “brain teasers.” Top finishers have received awards and are recognized at the Success Orientation Assemblies. Be sure to encourage your child(ren) to participate in this next contest.
The results for the first three contests are:
Contest #1
Shalom Bawitlung, 9 YOC
Lena Kumelska, 10 YOC
Kaan Kilic, 10 YOC
Lance Harvey, 9 YOC
Constest #2
Shalom Bawitlung 9 YOC
Kaan Kilic 10 YOC
Contest #3
Kaan Kilic, 10 YOC
Jama Deystani, 7 YOC
Distance Learning Plans
- If a full class is out due to a COVID case in the class, then the students will have live lessons with the teachers for two weeks.
- Elementary will meet on Zoom and submit work via Seesaw.
- Middle and Secondary will meet on Teams, get their assignments and submit work on Teams
Individual Student Quarantine:
- When a student is out due to a COVID exposure off-campus or on the bus they should follow the procedure below:
- Elementary students will get their assignments on Seesaw and meet with their teachers at times set by teachers and parents.
- Middle and Secondary students must log on to Teams daily for their assignments and can set up meetings with their teachers on Teams.
- Middle and Secondary students should also check their emails and respond to their teachers DAILY.
Let's work together to try to help our students keep up even if they are on distance learning! Teachers are posting work and lessons throughout the day, please have your child check in every period if possible!
