MI Advisor Update DECEMBER 2020
SkillsUSA Michigan
MEMBERSHIP and VIRTUAL
Message from the State Director
Let me start this newsletter with the information you want to know: State and National conferences will be virtual this year. These were difficult decisions to make but we feel that under the current pandemic situation it is the safest decision for our members.
I know this news is not what everyone wants to hear, but we feel it is really the best decision for this school year. I want our advisors to know that the state office is committed to offering exciting, interactive, and challenging events for members this school year. We have many committees at the regional, state and national level working to develop virtual activities and contests, that we hope, students and advisors will find meaningful and beneficial.
I am compelled to strongly recommend engaging in SkillsUSA this year. Your students are seeking opportunities to engage and grow. SkillsUSA offers you, as an advisor, many free benefits that you can tie into your classroom activities that can have a lasting benefit to your students. Your membership and that of your students helps SkillsUSA Michigan and the national office to do exciting things for it's members. It's a different kind of year and we need your support more than ever.
- Please feel free to reach out via email: cwarning@emich.edu, voice call via office phone: 734-785-3888, or text via google voice: 734-985-0270. Currently, I am working from virtually from home for the remainder of 2020.
Thank you for your support and patience during my transition as I learn and find ways to help make 2020/2021 a great year for our SkillsUSA members.
Carrie Warning, SkillsUSA State Director

Membership Registration Deadline
Many advisors asked for an extension on membership this year due to the pandemic, so we are extending until the end of January for this year only.
January 30, 2021 is the deadline for your final membership. All students must be paid members of SkillsUSA Michigan to participate in regional, state and national competitions and/or conferences.
All membership registrations must be submitted online at http://www.skillsusa-register.org/. Please make sure that all membership checks are sent directly to the National SkillsUSA office. When registering, be sure to also register your section under the specific program name, not just Mixed Training. This information is very helpful to the national office in determining the programs that each school offers.

Community Service Projects
Community Service Highlight
Please consider sending information about your school's community service projects.
Community Service Projects are an important way to instill good citizenship in our members. They will also be great chapter building activities during this time of limited large gatherings as a way to bring chapter members together to work in small teams to accomplish the goals of your community service project. Have your chapter’s Community Service Project highlighted in the SkillsUSA Michigan newsletter and on the SkillsUSA Michigan web site! Send a short summary of your project and any photo(s) to cwarning@emich.edu. Your Community Service Project will be added to the next newsletter and posted on our web site and Facebook page for all to see!
