Workforce Experience for Engineering Academy Students

Engineering Academy students are working on computer aided design using the Solid Edge program. Once complete, the designs will be produced on the Academy's 3D printer. This knowledge can lead to careers as a Drafting and Design Technician, Mechanical Designer, Architectural Draftsperson, Design Engineer or Technical Illustrator, with a starting salary of around $50,000 annually. Girls Basketball in the Top 5

Our Lady Trojans are ranked 4th in the state in the first Alabama Sports Writers Association basketball poll of the season! They travel to #5 Sparkman tomorrow night on their road to State. We need a big crowd to take away that home court advantage! (VB 7:30, VG 6:00, JVBG 4:30, FB 6:00)

Hazel Green High Cadets Receive Motivation Award

Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Bob Lehtonen was on campus recently to present our JROTC cadets with the Motivation Award they had won at Redstone’s JROTC Day earlier this year. The students had the opportuntiy to learn about military life from the senior enlisted Soldier and receive valuable advice on preparing for their careers after high school. Hazel Green's JROTC program is one of the best on our area thanks to 1st Sergeant Lawrence Schultz and Commander Paul Matheny.

UNA Scholarship Deadline

Seniors, don't forget the University of North Alabama deadline for scholarships is this Monday, December 15th. Students may use the December 13th ACT score for scholarship consideration this year as long as they have applied by 12/15.

National School Counseling Week Poster & Essay Contest

All entries should reflect the designated theme:

· Grades K-11: What are School Counselors and how do they help students? How have you been helped?

· Grade 12: How has a School Counselor helped guide you toward your future?

should not exceed 11x17 and should be completed on paper or poster board—not canvas.

ESSAYS should not exceed 1 page. Typed essays should utilize a clear/professional font, size 12 point or larger, along with single- or double-spacing. If handwritten, essays should be clearly legible. Neatness counts! All essays must provide a clear description/ discussion related to the designated theme.

The state-level 1st place winner for 12th grade will receive a $1000 scholarship for post-secondary endeavors, sponsored by Alabama College and Career Guide ( Enrollment in a post-secondary institution at the time of scholarship award is required. Please contact Sheryl Smith at with questions.

Current Announcements

Learning Community Fundraiser - The Learning Community will be selling Trojan Nation shirts January 5-16 to raise funds for community outings. Shirts are long-sleeve, Comfort Color. Shirts will be sold at $25 each, and will be in two to three weeks after final order is placed.

All students in all classes will have a final exam. Final exams will be December 17 and 18. Both of the days are half-days of school for the high school students, and check outs will not be permitted. We will dismiss car riders and drivers at 11:45. We will then dismiss bus riders shortly thereafter. We will serve breakfast and lunch on these days for those students who want to eat.

Speak Up Survey - We want your feedback! The Speak Up 2014 survey is a chance for you to tell us your ideas about how our school is using technology to improve teaching and learning. The data from the survey will be used to create the school technology plan. Please take a few minutes to complete it.

Italy/France Trip Deadline - December 11, 2014 is the deadline for the discounted price for Mrs. Braudaway’s France/Italy trip for summer 2016. Please contact Jacqueline Braudaway with questions.

Athletic Physicals
- Huntsville Hospital Sports Center and TOC Sports are offering City Wide Physical Exams again on Saturday, January 10th from 8:00-10:00am at the D1 Sports Training Facility in Jones Valley. The cost is $10 per athlete.

HGHS Basketball Cheer Clinic - Saturday, January 10, 2015 from noon to 4:00pm at the Hazel Green High School Gym. All elementary and middle school girls are invited to attend! The clinic will focus on cheerleading technique and teach cheers. Best of all, the girls will perform with the basketball cheerleaders at the home game, Friday, January 16 at 6:00pm! Art Club dues ($10.00) are due by December 10th. Order your Art Club t-shirts now. The cost is $8.50 and you can pay Ms. Weir or online at Deadline for t-shirt orders is Friday, December 12th.

DECA/FBLA Shirts and Toy Drive - FBLA/DECA members are doing a Chirstmas Toy Drive until December 15th. Members, please bring a $1.00 - $5.00 unopened toy to room C207 and put it in the toy collection box. We will donate the toys to our local Toys for Tots on December 15th. Also, any FBLA/DECA member who ordered a club T-shirt may come by room C207 on Tuesday to pick it up.

Winter Coat Drive - First Priority will be doing a winter coat drive for the less fortunate until Christmas Break. Please bring coats, hats, gloves and scarves to Ms. Glenn’s office before or after school.

Winter Clothing Drive - The Math team is collecting warm winter clothing for the less fortunate. You can find drop off boxes in the attendance office and Coach Morrow's classroom.

FBLA/DECA Toy Drive - FBLA/DECA is collecting toys for our local Toys for Tots program. Anyone that wants to participate, please bring a $1 to $5 toy and place it in the toy drop-off box in room C207.

Service Hours - Burritt Museum has several holiday activities that need volunteers. Email or call Joan Morehead, (256-533-1365) if you need service hours. Holiday Magic December 11th-13th.

State FBLA President is coming to speak to all the FBLA/DECA members on January 6th at 3:45 in the Black Box. Refreshments will be served after his presentation. Please come meet our State FBLA officer and hear his presentation.

Pizza Hut in Meridianville has designated the first Tuesday of every month as Meridianville Eagles Boys Basketball Night. Pizza Hut will donate 10% of all earnings from 4:00pm-9:00pm for anyone who mentions MVMS Boys Basketball when ordering - dine-in, carryout, or delivery!

Special Programs

National Society of Black Engineers High School Essay Contest - The paper must address the topic of cyber security. With cyber threats in a state of rapid and continuous evolution, keeping pace in cyber security strategy and operation has become a major challenge. What is the significance or impact of cyber security in our daily lives? Authors of the top two essays will receive a monetary award in the amount of $150. Deadline is January 12, 2015. Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week - Applicants must be a high school senior, have a minimum GPA of 3.5 and display a history of athletic and academic accomplishments, as well as community/civic involvement. All weekly winners are invited to a banquet held in their honor in May, and two students are selected as Athletes of the Year. The two Athletes of the Year each receive a $1,000 scholarship. Trojan Daily Tips - All the newest information will be at the top, followed by our Athletic Schedules, Current Announcements, Senior Information and Permananent Announcements. Information from previous newsletters remains posted in Current Announcements until it expires. I welcome parents to send scores, pictures and updates from any Hazel Green sports or activities. We can't brag about it if we don't know about it. Scholarship and college visit information will only be posted once, and then it can be found on separate webpages for General Scholarships, College and University Scholarships, and School Visits and Special Programs.

Revision to Pre-Approved Absence Policy- Students requesting pre-approved, excused absences will need to turn the form in to Mrs. Sharp at least 20 days before the planned absence. Forms can be found on the school website.

Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend
- Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.

1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.

2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.

3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.

Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors during school. All students are strongly encouraged to utilize this service provided to us. For more information, visit

First Priority/FCS
meets every Tuesday morning at 8:00 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.

Parenting Assistance Line:
PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.

Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.

Reward Cards:
Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit:
Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
