Staff Meeting Today
Our monthly staff meeting is set for today (2/11). We are using a format similar to the one we tried back in December with groups meeting around the building. The groups will be led by folks who attended the VASCD conference in November. They will share info they gained at the conference and group members will have the opportunity to brainstorm, share, and collaborate around these ideas. You can find your group assignment here.
I Make a Difference
From Mary Webber
I am very happy to pass along the "I Make A Difference" award to a wonderful teacher and mentor. She is someone I truly admire and enjoy working with. She is always ready to help and answer questions, even when I interrupt volleyball practice after school on a Friday. Sheryl is such a strong support and advocate for her students, and always sees the best in her students. Every One Lunch, Sheryl has an open classroom and the students flock to her room because of the caring environment she provides. She manages so much and does it all with a smile. No amount of words could express how much I appreciate all that Sheryl does. Sheryl Grumney you truly make a difference! Thank you for all you do and know that you are an amazing teacher.

Beauty and the Beast
We just finished auditions and have put together a wonderful cast and crew for our spring production of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, March 28-30. We are so excited to make this a schoolwide event and are thrilled with the turnout from our Eagle Nation. The cast will even feature a member of our faculty, as the talented Mr. Tim Wright will be playing Cogsworth! If you are interested in putting your performance or technical talents to work, please consider joining the cast or crew. We’d love to feature more faculty members on stage, especially in our large opening number as Townspeople. We’re also looking for anyone that has unusual talents that can be featured on stage such as juggling, acrobatics, unicycling, etc. If you have construction, crafting, or sewing expertise, we’d LOVE your assistance in creating set pieces, props, and costumes! If you’re interested contact Terri Gayer tbgayer@vbschools.com
Also, save the date and “be our guest” as an audience member!

Black History Month Resources
As the nation observes Black History Month, the Department of Teaching and Learning is pleased to share with teachers the Virginia Department of Education’s (VDOE) Black History Month resources celebrating and honoring African Americans and their achievements and contributions to America. In 1925, Carter G. Woodson and the organization he founded, the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH), conceived and announced Negro History Week. Expanded to a month in 1976, ASNLH, now the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) continues to promote the study of Black history all year.
The resources below support the 2015 History and Social Science Standards of Learning:
- Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), publishing several scholarly works and establishing Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month.
- H.R.1242 - 400 Years of African-American History Commission Act - signed into law in 2018. This bill establishes the 400 Years of African-American History Commission to develop and carry out activities throughout the United States to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Africans in the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia, in 1619.
- Virginia’s 2019 AMERICAN EVOLUTION™ commemoration - highlights the significance and modern relevance of several important events that occurred in Virginia in 1619. Explore the 2019 commemoration’s education resources, including primary source materials, videos and innovative lesson ideas to use in your classroom all year long.
- The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution, and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society at February is African American History Month and National Archives Black History.
