Golden Eagles Basketball Team Working Hard In The Offseason
AHSAA “BYLAW OF THE WEEK”
“BYLAW OF THE WEEK”
Scenario: Your school’s Varsity Softball Coach has organized her pre-season schedule. The plan is to work after school three days a week for 1 hour each day in small groups by dividing the 15 available players into 3 groups of 5. On Monday, Group 1 will be in the batting cages with Coach Smith; Group 2 will be on the field working on ground balls, fly balls and game situations with Coach Jones; and Group 3 will be in the weight room with Coach Harris. On Tuesday, the groups will rotate so that Group 1 will be on the field, Group 2 will be in the weight room and Group 3 will be in the batting cages. On Thursday, the groups will rotate again so that they all have one day at each location. With this plan, all the players will get to do a little of everything and be with each coach throughout the fall, and no player will have more than 2 hours per day. Question: According to AHSAA By-laws, is this plan permissible?
Rule III, Section 15. Coaching Outside School Year: “…AHSAA certified coaches from the school’s staff may hold organized instruction outside of the sports season during the school year in groups not to exceed 50% of the players required to play the game (AHSAA Section 6, Part B) for a maximum of 2 hours per week per athlete.”
Note: No more than 1 coach per sport at a time, per school to work with no more than 50% of a team, two hours a week. No student is allowed to work more than 2 hours per day. No two coaches may work at the same time.
Note: A coach cannot work with any student during the DEAD PERIOD. The first 2 weeks of the school year are a dead period. (At the end of each sport season, if a student is not beginning another sport, a student must have a two-week period of rest before a coach can work with him/her.)
Penalty: The scenario above is a violation of AHSAA bylaws. The school would be in violation because more than one coach and more than 50% of the softball team are working at the same time. Only ONE coach can be working on skills development with no more than 5 softball players at a time, and no player may work more than 2 hours per week. A school found in violation of this rule may be assessed a monetary fine; coaches and/or players may be suspended from contests; and restitution for practice time may be assessed.
Proactive Measures: Ensure that all coaches understand what constitutes 50% of the team in each sport. Remind them the first 2 weeks of school (school year starts with first fall sports practice) is a DEAD PERIOD for all Winter & Spring sports, and an athlete must have a two-week rest period at the conclusion of a sport season before working on an out-of-season sport. Make sure that only 1 coach, per sport, per school, is working with nor more than 50% of a team on skills development or instruction during the off season.
