Week of December 6
A Message from Dr. Collins
Greetings Pelican Families,
Gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. That is a perfect reflection of what I have experienced here at Port Wentworth. Every day, I am moved and inspired by what I see. Every day, I marvel at the incredible devotion of our staff and their unique ability to teach and inspire our children. Every day, I celebrate the amazing support of our parents and community.
I believe that the success of our school is built on a foundation of mutual respect and inclusiveness. Every day, dedicated teachers and staff nurture a culture of fairness, love and caring, all focused on the goal of providing a safe learning environment for our students and families. PWES is committed to continuing this focus and supporting our families during the school day and beyond.
The new Year Round Update(YRU) form is now available in the PowerSchool Parent Access Portal. This form allows parents/guardians the ability to update phone numbers, emails, and emergency contacts anytime throughout the rest of the school year. Data is updated immediately in PowerSchool upon form submission. Please note that addresses and parent/guardian names cannot be updated in the YRU. Parents will need to contact the schools directly for those requests as additional documentation is required.
A few reminders are below:
- Our school uniform colors are red, white or navy blue shirts with navy or khaki bottoms. Please see further descriptions below.
- Early dismissal ends at 3:00. Students will not be allowed to be signed out after this time. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience.
During the time frame of 8:45am-9:15am, and 3:45pm-4:30pm, the front of the school is designated for buses. Please park or pull all the way forward.
- We do not have working water fountains in our building, but we do have water filling stations. Please send your child to school with a water bottle labeled with his/her name.
Thank you again for notifying the school and keeping your student home when sick or has tested positive for COVID-19. Your support tremendously helps our Contact Tracing Team to be able to identify close contacts and complete the necessary steps to ensure the classroom environment remains safe for students and staff. Students who are out due to being quarantined will be able to access assignments via tools provided by their teacher.
Below is clarification about when students are able to work from home. Thank you for your continued support.
When Can Students Work From Home
Please understand that PWES does not have an option for students enrolled to choose to work virtually, except under short, defined conditions.
Limited approval is granted to identified students to work from home, temporarily, for the following reasons:
- We have asked the student to isolate or quarantine.
- The student has been mandated to quarantine or isolate by the Department of Public Health.
- Someone in the household is ill, awaiting COVID test results, or the student is feeling ill.
Please know that such approval is limited to the medically necessary quarantine or isolation period. Having a student work from home due to fear of exposure at school cannot be approved.
We encourage you to continue to self-monitor for symptoms of COVID-19, wash your hands frequently and keep children home if they are not feeling well. We want to keep our students and staff safe and healthy!
In the event that your child is not feeling well and it's after hours or the weekend, please see the section below labeled, "Is Your Child Not Feeling Well?" There is a link for you to provide us much needed information regarding a Positive test result and/or symptoms. If you complete the electronic form, please keep your child at home the next day and a member of our Contact Tracing Team will contact you.
If you are have questions for our Transportation Department regarding your child's bus route, they can be reached at 912-395-5591. They have extended hours M-F 5:00 pm.-8:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
Regarding Mask/Face Coverings: To ensure we are able to continue with our plan for 5-days a week of in-person instruction, masks would be required while inside any SCCPSS facility as a health and safety requirement for the start of the 2021-22 school year. This includes all students, staff, and visitors regardless of vaccination status.
Mask/Face Wearing Protocols will remain in place until further notice. SCCPSS monitors local health conditions regularly with guidance from the Coastal Health District. Should mask/face covering requirements ease for students and staff, families will be notified through the District’s parent notification system and the SCCPSS website at sccpss.com.
Here at PWES, we cater to the whole child and family through our Pelican Pantry. If your family is in need of nonperishable food items, please contact Mrs. Stephanie Clark-Williams at 912-395-6742 or email Stephanie.Clark-Williams@sccpss.com.
Lastly, please visit our virtual Parent Resource Center for other instructional games, manipulatives, videos and more.
Please follow us on our social media pages (Facebook @pwespelicans & Twitter @pwespk2) for additional information.
The first Wednesday of every month, Parker's gives back to the community! Please click the button below to sign up for our school to receive a generous donation.

Counselor Comments
Hello, everyone! I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!
The week before the break, our students celebrated National Career Development Week. I saw some amazing work as our kids talked about what they wanted to be when they grow up and what some of their goals for the future are.
Here are some tips you can use to keep their enthusiasm going while helping them to learn about all of the careers that are out there:
• Talk about your job. Most children can’t explain what their parents do for a living.
• Take your child to work with you occasionally. Point out not only what you do but what others do.
• Encourage your child to talk with adult relatives and friends about their work.
• Help your child understand that all kinds of work are needed in our society and are honorable.
