THE HATTER UPDATE

The communication forum for high school families

NOVEMBER

It's hard to tell with some of the crazy weather patterns we have experienced over the last few weeks, but it's officially November and the cold weather may be here to stay. At this point, we have completed almost a quarter of the academic year. The first marking period officially ends next Friday, November 12th. The second marking period will begin on Monday, November 15th.

DIWALI

Diwali, or Dipawali, is India's biggest and most important holiday of the year. The festival gets its name from the row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. This festival is as important to Hindus as the Christmas holiday is to Christians. The celebration of this holiday lasts for five days. We are proud to support and recognize our high school families celebrating this holiday.

KEYSTONE EXAMS

Information regarding Keystone Exams has been communicated to the students and families who will be testing in the areas of Algebra I, Biology, and English Literature. Families received the information on October 27th. Exam dates are as follows:

Algebra I - December 9

English Literature - January 4th & 5th

Biology - January 11th & 12th

*We will provide additional information in the coming weeks regarding the schedule for the day*

ATTENDANCE NEWS

  • Students who have an early dismissal should bring the dismissal note to the attendance. The attendance office secretary will provide a pass that permits the early dismissal.
  • Students who arrive late MUST check in at the attendance window.
  • Students leaving early for an appointment must check out at the attendance window.
  • Students who are late to their first period without a pass, or who cut first-period will be marked as unexcused and will show up as absent for the day in our Power School system.

VAPING

Across the country, schools are dealing with increased vape use in high schools. That trend has extended to Montgomery County and ultimately here at Hatboro-Horsham HS. We are asking that you have conversations with your child(ren) about the impact of these decisions from a health and safety standpoint as well as a disciplinary and criminal justice perspective. Should you believe your child has a problem, please contact the guidance counselor and SAP team for supports and resources.

VETERAN'S DAY CELEBRATION

The high school will host our first annual Veteran's Day Tribute. On November 11, 2021, from 9:15 am-10:00 am, we will recognize military veterans from all branches of the armed forces celebrating their commitment and dedication. This is an outdoor event that will take place at the front of the high school. Please take a look at the flyer below with QR code for registration information - this registration is for an HHHS student to register with a veteran they would like to honor.

STUDENT SURVEYS

Reminder: Students will engage in the Pennsylvania Youth Survey (PAYS) on November 8th, during HATS. The survey is for students in grades 6, 8, 10 & 12. The survey is completely anonymous and will be delivered to HHHS students electronically. We have selected the HATS period so that students can complete the survey without missing valuable class time.

The data gathered in PAYS serve two primary needs.

1. The results provide school administrators, state agency directors, legislators, and others with critical information concerning the changes in patterns of the use and abuse of these harmful substances and behaviors.

2. The survey assesses risk factors that are related to these behaviors and the protective factors that help guard against them. This information allows community leaders to direct prevention resources to areas where they are likely to have the greatest impact.
