School Opening Plan
Happy Summer! I hope that everyone has had a great holiday and is looking forward to the start of the new school year. We are busy preparing to see our students on campus!
We understand that the situation with COVID-19 is ever-changing and the government may institute new regulations at any time. Our plan at this time is to have on-campus learning for all age levels, daily, starting on August 19th. We will NOT also be offering online lessons. The plan is subject to change pending the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Education regulations. As of today, we have not heard any news from the Azeri government about the re-opening of schools. We will keep the community posted, should new regulations be announced in the future.
Travel and Quarantine
We ask parents to be diligent about protecting their children and themselves against COVID.
New Staff Members
We are very lucky to have two highly qualified teachers joining our team.
Introducing Dr. Tom Nykl
I would like to introduce myself to the BIS community. I am Thomas Nykl and I look forward to meeting and working with the BIS students, parents and staff this school year.
This will be my sixth year teaching with QSI. Previous QSI schools include Chisinau, Minsk and Tirana. My primary areas of teaching are mathematics and the physical sciences for both middle school and high school students. I also have a background in computer applications and programming. My previous QSI students have had very good success with their AP test scores and I hope this will continue in Baku. Earlier in my career I taught physics and mathematics at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee for 17 years and at three other non-QSI international schools. I hold a Ph.D. from Marian University.
Interests other than teaching include jogging, biking, hiking and weight lifting. I am a history buff who enjoys exploring ancient ruins. I am looking forward to learning some of the history and culture and exploring the region of what is today called Azerbaijan. Hopefully, the modest amount of Turkish I have learned in the past will be helpful here.
Welcome to Ms. Maureen Ehler!
My name is Maureen Ehlers and I am very happy to be joining the Baku International School community.
I was born in Lusaka, Zambia, into a multicultural family that includes my sister, Sheryl Brown, who is a current teacher with QSI in Baku. I was born in Zambia and moved to the USA when I was one year old. As we moved to Cairo, Egypt when I was 6 years old, my family and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Scotland, England, and France. In Cairo, Egypt, I attended first grade.
As a college student, I also spent a year of my undergraduate college work in Zimbabwe, at the University of Zimbabwe. I also spent a summer studying in the Pacific Rim of Asia and took a semester of Independent Study in Australia during my senior year of university.
As an adult, I have visited Moldova, and various countries in Central and South America. In fact, the only continent I have not yet visited is Antarctica! That is still on my bucket list!
I have a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology from Michigan State University, a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a teaching certification from the State of California. My teaching experience includes 14 years of teaching between Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, along with four years of Middle School. Along with teaching a year and a half of early childhood education.
