Mustang Round-Up
January 1, 2020 Volume 21
Reflections From the Principal
A couple of notes as we return to school and begin the second half of the year:
- We will not have incentive time until January 21st.
- Please review the January Advisory Calendar as it is updated often.
- All grades are due by Monday, January 6th, at 8 am. If you have students who still need to take assessments or complete things, please enter an "incomplete" and communicate with Mr. Webb or I about your plan to get those assessments/grades completed.
- If a student asks about a schedule change for second semester, please direct them to the guidance office to complete a schedule change request form. No schedule changes will be made after January 10th.
- Please give a warm welcome to Mrs. Tiffany Bowling, who will start with us in the main office on Thursday this week! Tiffany will be working with Chelsey this semester, in order to ensure a smooth transition in replacing her. Welcome Tiffany to our Mustang team!
Again, welcome back to school and let's finish the school year strong!

New Year, One Word! #OneWord365
Forget New Year’s Resolutions. Scrap that long list of goals you won’t remember a few weeks from now anyway!
Choose just one word.
One word you can focus on every day, all year long… One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live.
It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your year, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps.
Discover the big impact one word can make.
One word. 365 days. A changed life.
WHAT'S YOUR WORD FOR 2020?

Fountain Central's Top Ten Events/Stories of First Semester!
As I began to reflect on all the great things that have happened at FC during the first semester this year, I became quickly overwhelmed with the amount of things I could mention. While there are certainly more than 10 great events/stories that have taken place over the course of the last 6 months, I kept it to the top 10 (in no particular order)!
#2 - 2019-2020 Incentive Time - Our first semester of "Incentive Time" for students was deemed successful by staff and students! Students who met criteria for their particular grade level were able to go to different areas of the building during homeroom time on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our supervisors say it's gone well, as students have been responsible and teachers report that students work hard to gain incentive time. Students in our COMPASS group reported enjoying incentive time and they think it has helped motivate students to work harder and get their grades up.
#3 - College Go Week - Mrs. Foxworthy, College and Career Readiness Coach - Mrs. Foxworthy put on a fabulous "College Go Week" this school year! From homeroom college door decorating to community members supporting students with college applications, it was a huge success! We had so many senior students complete college applications with support who might not have done so otherwise. Thank you for your hard work and dedication, Mrs. Foxworthy! You are appreciated!
#4 - New SEFSC Social Emotional Learning Coordinator and Botvin's LifeSkills Training Curriculum - Mrs. Britton has taken off in her new SEL role for the corporation and we are making great gains! She has implemented programs/competencies and SEL initiatives in both the elementary and high school to support the social emotional needs of both students and staff. Mrs. Britton has also been working with Mr. Bolin to support the implementation of Botvin's LifeSkills Training SEL Curriculum to all 7th grade students in Health class. We look forward to seeing our students progress through this important curriculum. Thank you for all you have done, Mrs. Britton!
#5 - Fountain Central Community's Generosity for our students and our school - There is no question, if Fountain Central has a student need, the community is right there to support us! I can't begin to cover the amount of generosity that has been shown right here in our community to support staff and students in many ways. We have benefitted from financial support to feed students on the weekends, support from many area churches for multiple events (backpack program housing and campus evacuation drill), a shoot out organized by Jeff Carver to raise money for our FC Families in Need Fund, our PTO providing lunch to show appreciation for teachers and their hard work, Christmas gifts provided by Spanish Club, FFA, and many faculty/staff members at FC to ensure that all kids have a good Christmas, community members paying off lunch account balances, purchasing Academic Super Bowl polos, and honestly I could go on and on. There's a lot to be said about the FC Community and the amount of support they provide for students and the school! We are blessed!
#6 - Andrew Sillery was named a Commended Student in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, was presented to this scholastically talented senior.
About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic purpose. Although they will not continue in the 2020 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2020 competition by taking the 2018 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
#7 - FC Students and Staff Giving Back to the Community - Not only have I witnessed the generosity of the community to our school, but I've also witnessed the amount of generosity from our students and staff by giving back to our very own community. Mr. Acton's class has built a garage for the Rice Family and a wheelchair ramp at Mr. William's house. These students worked very hard to build things for those in need. Also, Willy Frazee volunteers his own time to take our recycling to the recycling center when it's needed. I've seen a tremendous amount of volunteer time put in to our backpack program for students weekly and the FFA program feeding local farmers during harvest time. I've seen parents and staff members join forces to raise money for families who have lost loved ones in the junior class and also the many faculty/staff members giving donations and gifts for students to have a good Christmas. Our staff is one of a kind and you give your all to our students and families. Thank you!
#8 - FC Staff Comaradarie - I don't know about all of you, but I cannot tell you how much fun it's been to see the FC staff comaradarie this school year. The school spirit with dress up days (clearly Mr. Hall and Mrs. Baldwin win this with flying colors), eating lunch and playing games in the teacher's lounge together, everyone having a great time together at our Christmas party, the fellowship during our Christmas breakfast provided by the FCA, teachers working with new teachers, and most importantly, the support you all provide for each other at any given moment, without even batting an eye. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, "We may have all come on different ships, but we're in the same boat now." I'm looking forward to seeing what 2020 has in store for the staff and students at FC!
#9 - Carson Eberly named Journal Review Tennis Player of the Year - Carson Eberly settled in as Fountain Central’s No. 1 singles player as a sophomore, and that set him up for a chance of even more success down the road. Just a year later, and Eberly’s experience and hard work has already paid off. The junior posted a 20-win season this fall, won the Wabash River Conference, and helped the Mustangs to a third-straight sectional title – on his way to earning the 2019 Journal Review Boys’ Tennis Player of the Year.
# 10 - Ryan Hall is one of ten educators in the State of Indiana to be selected to attend the 2020 Marine Corps Educators Workshop in San Diego, CA. The week long educators workshop is held in February and is designed to allow participants to experience firsthand how Marines are made, what they stand for, and the many benefits and opportunities that come with earning the title. Mr. Hall will have the opportunity to experience demonstrations, displays, and tour many Marine Corps facilities. All expenses are paid for by the Marine Corps and educators receive continuing education credits for attending.
As I said before, there are definitely more than 10 great things that we have accomplished this school year. However, there is a lot more work to do! We are a team, in the same boat, and I'm looking forward to our progress second semester. Happy New Year and I hope you enjoy the video below!
