Renee Mizelle, Principal
A Message from the Principal
Vaughan Elementary Students and Parents,
I would like to thank you for your support, patience and understanding as we have embarked upon a new way of teaching and learning this school year. I want to encourage you to make sure your child attends all live virtual classes. Your child should be attending the following classes each day: reading, math and science/social studies. Your child should also be attending one of the following resource classes each day: Media, Music, Spanish or Guidance. It is very important that your child attends these classes. Teachers are giving assignments for each class and are teaching the content for these classes daily. Please complete all assignments the week they are posted. The assignments are graded and become grades for the report card. If the assignments are not completed for the week your child will receive a grade of 0 for the assignments.
If your child needs help with an assignment or the content that is being taught in any subject, please have your child ask the teacher for help during their office hours. Each day each teacher has office hours to answer questions and to provide individualized help for any student who needs it.
If you are having trouble with your chrome book or the internet please call the school. We will help you in any way we can to ensure that your child has what he/she needs to be successful. Remember we are a team and we can do anything if we work together. Henry Ford once said, "Coming together is a beginning, staying together is progress, and working together is success." If the home and school continue to work together our school year will be a successful one.

The End is Approaching!
Also, if at all possible teachers would love to see students in live lesson on a regular basis. We understand it is not always possible for students to attend live lessons, but when they do attend live lessons they are able to benefit from the teacher actively engaging them in the academic material. We look forward to seeing students in live lessons! We would like to encourage you to choose to have your child attend live lessons if at all possible because there will be less of a chance of them falling behind in their academic progress.
National Bullying Prevention Month
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a time to raise awareness about bullying.
What is Bullying?
Bullying is unwanted aggressive behaviors towards another person. It involves an imbalance of power between the bully and the target. The aggressive behavior is repeated over time. Bullying includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors, attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on purpose. Bullying can also take place through technology, known as cyberbullying. Examples of cyberbullying include mean text messages or emails, rumors sent by email or posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing pictures, videos, websites, or fake profiles.
What Should students do if they are getting bullied?
The number one thing students she be encouraged to do if they are getting bullied is to tell a trusted adult. Adult intervention is essential if someone is the target of bullying. Encourage your child to tell you, their teacher, counselor, principal, bus driver or any other adult if someone is repeatedly hurting them on purpose. Students should know that it is not their fault if they are getting bullied and they should be confident in themselves no matter what.
How Can We Prevent Bullying?
Treating others with kindness and respect can change the world and eliminate bullying. Stress to your children the importance of simple acts of kindness and respecting others. Teach them to embrace each other's differences. Encourage them to include those who may seem to be lonely. As adults, we must be good role models for our children, so be sure to show them how to be kind and respectful. We can always choose kindness.
How Did Vaughan Bring Awareness to Bullying Prevention this Month?
Vaughan students participated in a bullying prevention spirit week October 12-16. Students were encouraged to wear different items to promote kindness, unity, and self-confidence. Students were reminded that they have the power to stop bullying and be kind by dressing up as superheros. They wore wacky hats to promote each other's differences. They wore blue to support unity in bully prevention efforts. They wore their shirts inside out to remind them that unkind actions and words hurt us on the inside by hurting our feelings. Students wore sunglasses so they could say "See Me be____." This activity was to inspire them to think about how they want other people to see them. Thank you students for participating in our spirit week!

Read Ribbon Week
More than 100,000 schools and organizations throughout the U.S. celebrate Red Ribbon Week the last week in October. At least 80 million young people and adults participate in these celebrations. The goal is to teach students to stay away from drugs/alcohol and make healthy life choices. Did you know 4,300 children under the age of 21 die each year from underage drinking related causes? As drugs and alcohol continue to threaten the well-being of our youth, Red Ribbon Week’s mission is more relevant than ever. This year, we will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week October 26-30. Mrs. Callahan will be focusing her guidance lessons on avoiding peer pressure, positive decision making, and healthy choices throughout Red Ribbon Week.
We would like to ask students to wear red on Wednesday October 28th in solidarity of saying no to drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Send your pictures to Mrs. Callahan, so she can include them in our next newsletter.
