Happy Independence Day!
A Message from Mayor Turner
This July marks the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin becoming the first human beings to set foot on the moon. It was a triumph not just of science, but of the same American determination and exceptionalism we celebrate every year on the 4th of July.
When President John F. Kennedy proclaimed right here in Houston -- less than 60 years after the Wright Brothers first took flight -- that we would put a man on the moon, we did not cower in the face of insurmountable odds. We doubled down on our American ingenuity and tenacity.
As Houstonians, we can be doubly proud of those incredible moments in our country’s history -- and that’s why I am so excited about what’s in store for our city today thanks to CITGO Freedom Over Texas and NASA's Johnson Space Center.
As we come together to celebrate the anniversary of our independence, the anniversary of the moon landing, and the American values that made these historic steps possible, folks will get to be up close with our nation’s astronauts, top scientists, and some of NASA’s great robots and virtual reality experiences.
I hope that you’ll (safely!) enjoy this special experience, as well as all of the other celebrations we have planned throughout Houston as we celebrate our nation’s independence.
