From The Principal
We are so very excited to welcome our incoming 4th grade Dolphins, Challengers, Panthers, Greyhounds, and Bears to Collins Intermediate. The transition from elementary to intermediate is an important time. We want to ensure that your child and family have all the information and tools you need. For many families this transition may be a return trip that older siblings have already experienced. For others, this is a new frontier. Please be assured that, at Collins, we will work to make the next two years positive ones for your child. The transition process for fourth graders and their parents can be filled with questions and concerns. The administration and counselors at Collins will be communicating with the fourth grade teachers and counselors from each of the feeder schools to learn more about our new “Collins Cobras.”
All fourth graders will attend our orientation on Monday, April 4, 2022 to learn about fifth grade and all the wonderful things Collins has to offer. After Spring Break your child will be given a packet of information that outlines our Fine Arts and PE programs, school supplies as well as other information that will assist in the transition.
After a fun and restful summer vacation, you and your child are invited to attend both a 5th grade orientation and "Meet The Teacher”. The 5th grade orientation will be an opportunity for administrators and counselors to share information for the family as well as provide a brief tour of the building. Meet the Teacher is a “Come and Go” event. Dates and times for both of these events are listed below. The day of "Meet the Teacher" you will receive a welcome email from your child's homeroom teacher. When you and your child arrive to the event you will visit your child’s Learning Community and meet their homeroom teacher. School supplies (if ordered on-line) will be in the homeroom class along with a daily schedule. PTO will be available to answer questions about PTO membership, Friends of Collins, and on-line Spirit Wear sales for the upcoming school year. Fine Arts and PE teachers will be present to answer questions you may have about those programs. If you are unable to attend, your child will receive everything he or she needs on the first day of school. We are very excited about the new school year and looking forward to meeting you and your child.

Collins Questions and Answers
How are the students placed in classrooms?
Students are assigned to a Learning Community (LC) typically consisting of three teachers responsible for each of the content areas: reading/writing, math, science and social studies. Each LC is balanced with children needing a variety of instructional services, which include gifted/talented, special education, and Section 504. Also, we make every attempt to evenly distribute students from each of our feeder elementary schools.
Do the teachers coordinate assignments and test dates?
Every PLC (Professional Learning Community) and LC is required to conduct weekly meetings to review integrated activities, test dates, campus activities, homework, and to discuss the progress of their students. Each Learning Community will communicate assignments and due dates to students and parents.
How can students make a fine arts decision if they are unfamiliar with the program?
Fourth grade students will attend a presentation by the band/orchestra teacher on their home campus during the middle of April. Band and Orchestra will also host informational parent meetings April 20th and 21st. In the “Incoming 5th Student Packet” you will find information regarding the Fine Arts classes, which includes a QR code that directs ALL parents to a required Google Form to indicate the fine arts interest for their child. Families will receive information from the band and orchestra teacher regarding upcoming interview opportunities for placement purposes based on what interest is indicated in the form/survey.
If a student enrolls in Band or Orchestra, will they have an opportunity to take Art?
No. They will not have the opportunity to take Art. Band/Orchestra is taken for the entire year.
Can a sixth grader enroll in band or orchestra if they took art/music in the fifth grade?
No. The next opportunity to start Band or Orchestra as a beginner is in 7th grade.
Can my child take advanced math if they aren’t identified gifted/talented?
Yes. Students identified gifted/talented are placed in the program based on their content area of eligibility. Occasionally a child will demonstrate a strong aptitude for a content area in which they have not been identified. Collins will review the following data; 4th Grade Math and Reading STAAR tests, All Interim tests, BAS (reading level assessment), and grades from all four grading periods of 4th grade. Parents will be notified during the summer if their child is eligible for the advanced math class.
Do the children have Physical Education every day?
Students attend P.E. five days. On the sixth day, the students rotate in to the Library for a lesson that supports their core curriculum class. Students also have 20+ minute recess before or after lunch each day.
Will 5th grade students have lockers?
No. Students will not be assigned lockers. All students will utilize their backpacks to keep their belongings with them during the day. Things to keep in mind when preparing for the new school year; select a lightweight backpack, and large zipper binders are not recommended. We ask that students not use rolling backpacks due to classroom configurations.
What are the school hours?
Classes begin at 8:50 a.m. and end at 4:00 p.m. However, all students need to be in the building no later than 8:30 a.m. to prepare for the day.
Supervision begins at 7:45 a.m. for students attending before school activities or tutorials. We ask that students not be dropped off in the front of the school until 7:45 a.m.
Lunch Times:
Lunch schedules will be reviewed this summer. During the 2021-2022 school year our campus hosted four lunch blocks. The first two lunches are 5th grade and the final two lunches are 6th grade. Many factors will be considered as we set our lunch schedule for the upcoming school year. We will communicate the official lunch times during the summer.
How do I find information about my child’s bus number and the bus arrival and departure time?
Visit the Conroe ISD Website at http://www.conroeisd.net/ and click on “What Bus Do I Ride?”. 2022-2023 bus route information will not be loaded until beginning of August.
How do I make sure Collins has the most current contact information for my child?
During the month of July you will receive an email with your INFOSNAP log-in information. It is very important to take time to review and submit this information prior to school starting. This is a critical process that must be completed every year. A help document can be found in the incoming 5th grade packet.
